My kids stopped asking for things. Not because they didn’t want them. Because they KNEW.

Three years without a family holiday.

Not because we didn’t want one. Because I walked away from a career and then a coaching role that was taking more from me than it was giving, and the financial instability that followed meant the things we used to take for granted quietly stopped being options.

My wife took on more to help fill the gap. Schedules got complicated. Family time, REAL family time, became something we kept meaning to protect and kept failing to.

The kids never complained. Not once. They just grew up a little faster than I’d have liked.

That sits with me.

But we went. Seville. Ten days.

We’re not tourists. Never have been. We’re travellers.

So we ended up at an old olive oil mill near Ronda learning about a process that’s barely changed in centuries. Tasting six different varieties at the end while the kids argued about which one was best.

A place with no English menu. Córdoba Salmorejo. Ordered it twice because they couldn’t stop.

And I stood there watching them. Curious. Excited. Just kids.

I felt TWO things at once.

Sadness that it had taken this long. That they’d quietly carried the weight of a difficult year without ever asking why the holidays stopped. That I still thought my son was into Lego. That I was only just finding out my daughter is passionate about Japanese culture.

And PURE happiness. Because in that moment none of that weight was on them anymore.

I’ve been present. I’ve shown up every day. But there’s a difference between being THERE and being STILL.

When life is running at full speed you can be in the same house as your kids every single day and still miss things. Not because you’re absent. Because there’s no room for the slow conversations. The ones that only happen when nobody has anywhere to be.

That last few days gave us that room back.

If you’re a dad putting experiences on hold because money is tight or life keeps getting in the way, I see you.

It doesn’t have to be Spain.

It just has to be somewhere you can all STOP for a minute.

June named the problems.

July showed how they compound.

August gave you the rebuild.

September is different.

Not more diagnosis. Not more framework. What The Standard actually looks like when the system is working. What it feels like to live in it rather than build toward it.

If any of August has landed, comment “CAPACITY” before September starts. Five minutes and the audit tells you exactly where to begin.

See you in September.

THE REBUILD FILES - Case 04

Chris had worked with two coaches before me. Both good. He made progress with both. But it kept unwinding. Six months after finishing with the second coach he was back to where he’d started.

He came half-convinced he was the problem. He wasn’t.

Both previous approaches had addressed individual things without addressing the system underneath them. Training better but recovery still broken. Structure on paper but no identity framework to make him protect it.

We worked through the sequence properly. Energy first for six weeks. Structure for six weeks. Identity for six weeks.

At week four he sent me a message: ‘Woke up before the alarm for the first time in I don’t know how long.’

At week ten: ‘Trained four times this week. Not once did I have to convince myself.’

At week sixteen he said something I hear at this point when the system is working properly.

‘I don’t think about it anymore. It just happens.’

That’s the difference between a fix and a system.

Comment “CAPACITY” or visit balanceddadhq.com if Chris’s story sounds familiar.

Same question comes round every September.

Last year, were you still telling yourself you’d sort it in the new year? And did the new year actually change anything?

Or are you finally building something that holds this time?

Tell me below 👇

Most dads don’t come to me wanting to be high-capacity.

They come wanting to train without it always falling off. To arrive home with something left. To hold the standard they used to hold without it requiring constant effort to maintain.

They’ve usually tried fixing all of these things individually. And made some progress. And watched it unwind.

Because fixing things individually while the system underneath them stays broken produces short bursts and then collapses. It’s not a discipline problem. It’s a targeting problem.

The three markers in this carousel describe what it looks like when the targeting is right and the system is actually working. Not the aspirational version. The real one - available to any dad whose energy, structure and identity are addressed in the right sequence.

Slide 5 is the honest version. Worth reading before the CTA.

You’ve tried fixing the training. It came back within a few weeks.

You’ve tried getting the schedule under control. It fragmented by Tuesday.

You’ve tried getting back to the standard you used to hold. It slipped.

If you’ve been there, here’s what that pattern is telling you and it’s not what most people think.

It’s not that you lack discipline. It’s that you’ve been fixing the right things at the wrong level. The training isn’t the problem. The energy system underneath it is. The schedule isn’t the problem. The identity framework that makes you want to protect it is. The standard isn’t the problem. The structural conditions that make it sustainable are.

Fix things at the wrong level and you get temporary improvement followed by a return to baseline. Every time.

The sequence is the solution. Energy first. Structure second. Identity third. Each stage creates the conditions the next one requires.

That’s what the last four weeks have been about. That’s what the system produces when it works.

Comment “CAPACITY” this week if any of August has landed. And comment “RESET” for the free 4-Week Energy Reset Guide.

I don’t have time’ is the one I hear more than anything else.

Justin’s 45. Three young kids. A job that doesn’t switch off.

If anyone had an excuse, it was him. Here’s what actually happened.

New dad. Worst shape of his life. No time to fix it, or so he thought.

Lewis reached out at a point most people would’ve just accepted as ‘that’s life now.’

Here’s what changed, in his own words.

21/08/2026

There’s a moment most dads recognise when I describe it.

You’re physically in the room. Doing the bedtimes. Having the conversations. There for the things that matter.

But there’s a version of you that used to show up to these moments with more.

More curiosity, more patience, more of the quality of attention that makes presence feel full rather than just present.

And at some point that version became something you remember rather than something you are.

That’s not a character failure. It’s what identity drift produces when it goes unaddressed long enough.

The standard quietly adjusts until the gap between who you are and who you intended to be becomes the background noise of your daily life.

Here’s what I’ve found about where it starts.

Identity drift almost never begins in the most visible area. It starts in the lowest-stakes area, usually training or sleep, because nobody notices when those slip. The standard adjusts there first.

And once the framework that holds your standards starts to erode at its foundation, everything else follows gradually behind it.

The good news is it closes the same way it opened. One behaviour at a time. In the right sequence.

Comment “STANDARD” and I’ll send you the free Standard Gap Exercise.
