And while we’re talking menopause...
Can we talk about the “pink tax” for a second?
There seems to be a growing habit of putting the word “menopause” on a product, programme or service... and suddenly the price jumps.
Sometimes there’s a genuine reason for it.
Sometimes it just feels like clever marketing aimed at women who are already trying to work out what the hell is happening to their body.
I don’t charge more because someone is menopausal.
You don’t suddenly become a “special category” that needs an inflated price tag.
You need good coaching, sensible programming, proper nutrition advice and someone who understands that your training might need to change from week to week.
That’s it.
Menopause is something I take into account when I coach you.
It isn’t something I use to charge you more.

Strength training during menopause.......
Worth doing?
Abso-f**king-lutly
Will it magically fix everything, make you sleep 8 hours, remove every hot flush and stop you wanting to murder someone because they breathed too loudly?
Hell no!!!.
But it can help with a lot.
As oestrogen levels change through peri-menopause and menopause, you can see changes in muscle mass, bone density, body fat distribution, recovery, sleep and energy.
Which is exactly why strength training becomes so important.
The good bits -
You can maintain and build muscle.
You can get stronger.
You can support bone health.
You can improve body composition.
You can make everyday life easier.
And confidence tends to get a nice wee boost when you realise you’re lifting things you once thought were “too heavy”.
Also, NO, lifting weights will NOT suddenly make you bulky.
If it was that easy, half the gym would be absolutely delighted.
Now for the less glamorous bits.
Recovery can be unpredictable.
Sleep can be crap.
Energy can be up, down and all over the place.
Some days you’ll feel strong as hell.
Other days the warm-up feels like a personal attack.
You might have more joint aches, more fatigue, more stiffness, or just days where your body clearly hasn’t read the programme.
That doesn’t mean you stop.
It means you adapt.
Some sessions you push.
Some sessions you pull things back.
Some days you change the exercise completely because your body is saying “not today”.
That’s not failing.
That’s good coaching.
Menopause doesn’t mean you’re done.
It doesn’t mean you should avoid heavy weights.
And it definitely doesn’t mean you should accept getting weaker.
Strength training can be one of the best things you do during this stage of life.
You just need a plan that works with your body, not against it.

Bulgarian split squats.
One of the most hated exercises in the gym… but also one of the most useful when they’re done properly.
They build single-leg strength, improve balance and stability, expose strength differences between each side, and can seriously challenge the glutes and quads.
But the goal isn’t just to survive the set.
Foot position, torso angle, depth and control can completely change where you feel the movement. That’s why I don’t just hand someone dumbbells and tell them to “do split squats.” I coach the position, explain the reason behind it, and adjust it to suit the person in front of me.
This is what personal training should look like.
Not just counting reps.
Teaching movement. Building confidence. Improving strength. Getting results that carry over into everyday life and sport.
And yes… occasionally making clients question why they booked the session in the first place.
