Angus & Dundee: 63 Shots
Result: Angus & Dundee win by 5 shots overall!

📰 Match Report: Grit and Reshuffled Rinks Secure the Win.
An absolute monumental battle up at Elgin BC for the Dundee & Angus U25s squad! Despite some late team changes and a couple of rinks facing massive uphill struggles, the team's collective depth and grit shone through to secure a hard-fought 5-shot victory overall against a dangerous Bon Accord side.
Here is how the tactical drama unfolded rink-by-rink:
🎯 The Anchors: Jamie Low & Greg Hodgens Save the Day
●Jamie Low’s Rink (10 - 27 to Angus & Dundee): Captain Jamie Low put on a masterclass in leadership and skipping. His rink absolutely dismantled Bon Accord, dropping a massive +17 shot margin onto the master scoreboard. This was the powerhouse performance the county needed to absorb hits elsewhere.
●Greg Hodgens’ Rink (10 - 18 to Angus & Dundee): Greg’s rink showed superb tactical control, handling the Elgin pace beautifully to secure a vital +8 shot cushion. Between Jamie and Greg, the top half of the team provided a massive 25-shot advantage.
🧗 The Damage Control:
●Max Mculloch's back end (18 - 12 to Bon Accord): and the front end battled hard in a very tight, tricky rink. While Bon Accord took the win by 6 shots, Max and Ryan, kept the score respectable, avoiding a heavy blowout and protecting the overall team total. While the team ultimately pulled together to deliver the victory we know we could deliver against Bon Accord
● Calum Joiner, Ryan Sturrock, Rink (20 - 6 to Bon Accord): This was a tough game to watch from the bank. With Ryan Sturrock tasked with a heavy job, Calum and Ryan found themselves fighting being exposed to a difficult Bon Accord back-end. However, despite the nightmare -14 margin, Calum & Ryan's late-game damage control prevented an even heavier deficit, which ultimately saved the match overall.
🏆 The Tactical Takeaway
This is the epitome of county team bowls. You don't need all four rinks to win; you need the winning rinks to win big, and the struggling rinks to fight for every single shot to minimise the damage.
Jamie's +17 and Greg's +8 gave Angus & Dundee a 25-shot buffer, meaning even with Calum's tough afternoon, the squad walks away with the overall match victory. The team talk on trust and staying focussed clearly hit home when the pressure was mounted!
NB edits:
I never want to represent any young player incorrectly—especially when they fought hard in a difficult situation. (I had previously) mixed up players "twice" within teams and reported incorrectly.
I also had a slight mix-up in my report there where Calum Joiner's name was accidentally pasted twice, overlapping with Max McCulloch and Connor Hutcheon's rink.
This fixes the rink mix-up and reframes a gritty, defensive shift that protected the team's aggregate score. Which the team did VERY well.
°Next Venture is at home 2nd August, in the top 10
🏆 The Tactical Takeaway
Is exactly that,
"We win or We learn."

📰 Match Report: Dundee & Angus U25s Bow Out to a Class Grampian Side
Competition: U25 Scottish Cup K.O. Round 2
Opponent: Grampian
Result: Grampian Win
After a monumental morning victory against Bon Accord, the Dundee & Angus U25s ran into a historical powerhouse in the afternoon session, ultimately bowing out to a clinical Grampian squad. Sometimes in this sport, you don't lose the game—the opposition just wins it, and today, Grampian showed exactly why they have been the benchmark for so long.
📊 Rink Breakdown: The Afternoon Stint
●Greg Hodgens’ Rink (7 Down playing the last end): An absolute dogfight. Greg’s rink held their nerve and matched Grampian bowl for bowl all afternoon. Regardless of the final bowl on the 17th end, pushing a top-tier Grampian rink to a one-shot difference in the final stages is a massive testament to their grit.
●Max McCulloch’s Rink (Finished 1 Down): Max and his front end battled hard, but the Grampian skip managed to keep them at arm's length. Dropping just 7 shots against this caliber of opposition is a highly respectable shift.
●Calum Joiner’s Rink (Finished. 11 Down): After a bruising morning, Calum's rink faced another steep uphill battle. The Grampian consistency proved too much to overcome, but they kept fighting until the final jack.
●Jamie Low’s Rink (Finished 11 - 26): After his heroic +17 in the morning, the Captain ran into a Grampian skip who was simply unplayable this afternoon. Jamie’s rink pushed, but Grampian had the answers at the head every time.
🏆 The Selection teams Takeaway:
A Day to Be Proud Of
The defining tactical lesson from the afternoon was exactly what Jamie called out pre-game: short bowls don't win against elite teams. Grampian punished the short bowls and forced Dundee & Angus to play the heavy shots. They were the better team on the day, and there is absolutely no shame in shaking hands with an opponent who simply outplayed you.
The real story of the day isn't the afternoon loss; it's the 7:30 am start, the resilience after late team changes, and the gutsy 5-shot victory over Bon Accord in the morning. These young Angus and Dundee team gained invaluable experience stepping onto the mat against a dominant Grampian side. They now know exactly what the top tier of U25 bowls looks and feels like. The heads stay high, the county badge is worn with pride, and the bus ride back to Dundee is all about celebrating that morning win and the brotherhood built on the green today.
A massive shift put in by the entire squad—and a massive shift by the coaching and selection, committee staff on the bank.

Spending the day with Dundee & Angus U25's in the Scottish Cup Qualifiers on
Sunday 12th July at Elgin BC 11am start ,
A few team changes but all ready for the battle.
🚌🔥 Scottish Cup Qualifiers: The Dundee & Angus U25s!
We are on the road early this morning, heading up to Elgin BC for the Scottish Cup Qualifiers.
To the young squad stepping onto the green today—this is your battlefield. We’ve had a few late team changes, but the mission remains exactly the same.
Before the first jack is rolled at 11 am, here are your four pillars for the day:
🌡️ 1. Acclimatise Quickly. You’ve had a long bus journey, but the moment you step onto the grass, the travel is over. Elgin's greens will have their own pace and runs. Use your trial ends ruthlessly. Dial in your weight, read the lines early, and don't wait until the 5th end to figure out the green. The fastest team to adapt is the hardest team to beat.
🤝 2. Trust Each Other
With a few reshuffles in the rinks, absolute trust is non-negotiable today. Leads, trust your Skip's calls. Skips, trust your front end to build the head. If someone drops a short bowl, don't drop your heads—back them up on the next delivery. We win as a united county squad, not as individuals.
🎯 3. Stay Focussed
This is a 7-hour grind. There will be momentum swings, dropped ends, and heavy pressure. Keep your focus strictly focussed. Don't worry about the overall scoreboard; focus only on the bowl in your hand and the tactical plan for the end you are currently playing. Keep moving forward, one delivery at a time.
🎉 4. Have Fun and Enjoy the Battle
You have earned your spot here representing Dundee & Angus. Pressure is a privilege. Smile, embrace the nerves, and enjoy the absolute thrill of top-level competitive bowls. Play with passion, play with fire, and leave everything you have out on the green today. Don't get home tonight saying to yourself, "I wish I had played that bowl"
Let’s get to work, team !. 🏴 👊🏆 🏴

The Bester Ex*****on:
The power for 23m,27m,31m must come from the legs and the length of the step, not the shoulder. The player needs to execute a deep, explosive lunge, letting the arm act as a whip that follows the body's momentum. If the foundation is solid, the bowl will easily reach the ditch without needing to be forced.

📈 Elevate Your Game with KBowlsCoaching.com
The coaching journey I deliver is bespoke and unique to every bowler's needs. I don't just watch you play; I break down the foundational mechanics of your delivery using hard data to validate every adjustment we make.
My coaching philosophy is simple:
FACTORS in your game aren't broken, so I won't tear it down.
I remove the panic of a "total rebuild" and frame our work as an upgrade.
We revise and analyse your natural processes, and I only fix the elements that are costing you consistency. It is about taking the mechanics you already have and refining them for elite, repeatable performance.
Here is what you can expect when you book a session:
We run highly productive, analytical sessions on the green, heavily featuring:
The 24 Bowls Test for the Draw
The 24 Bowls Test for the Conversion
After our session, you don't just walk away with advice. You receive a structured, constructive feedback summary breaking down your data, linking it directly to your mechanics, and setting a clear roadmap for our development block.
👇 Here is a glimpse of the detailed feedback my players receive:

📊 Coaching Review:
[Player Name]
(Sample Report)
Great work on the green today. As discussed, your current delivery is fundamentally strong,
To find that next level of elite, repeatable consistency, we are going to focus on upgrading your baseline mechanics.
Here is the breakdown of your session data and what it tells us:
🎯 1. The 24 Bowls Draw Test Analysis:
Forehand: 23m = [Data]
| 27m = [Data]
| 31m = [Data]
Backhand: 23m = [Data]
| 27m = [Data]
| 31m = [Data]
The Takeaway:
The data highlights your natural touch, but it also isolates the exact areas where variance creeps into your game. Because certain delivery styles rely heavily on muscle memory rather than natural physics, it becomes harder to regulate weight across different lengths. By implementing our agreed mechanical upgrades, we will iron out these peaks and valleys to give you a reliable baseline on every length.
⚔️ 2. The Conversion Bowls Test Analysis:
Forehand: 23m = [Data]
| 27m = [Data]
| 31m = [Data]
Backhand: 23m = [Data]
| 27m = [Data]
| 31m = [Data]
The Takeaway:
When you are asked to change your weight to convert a shot, data often shows where a delivery breaks down under the slight change in physical effort. By trusting our guidance to let the weight of the bowl and the length of your step do the work, your conversion weights will become automatic rather than forced.
🛣️ The Development Roadmap:
We will move into a tailored 2 to 6-week review block to build and engrain these upgrades. Our core goals are:
1. Trust: Have the belief that this development will bring the success you crave. Trust the data, trust the guidance, and be true to yourself.
2. Change: The key to performance is altering the small, crucial habits that hold you back. Embrace the journey.
3. Patience: Practice makes permanent. Being passionate about learning is the key to unlocking your personal upgrade.
4. Results Focus: Delivering the results you know you can deliver. We set clear missions for competitive play with the mindset that we win or we learn—never defeated.

Tonight I took part in an incident that might be common to some, being "well down" in a game and thoughts of throwing the towel in.
What factors do you consider ?
Tonight's game was in the County Championships , Triples discipline (15ends)
📋 Game Summary Triples Qtr Finals
Muirhead & Birkhill○ bc
V
Dudhope□ bc
@ Lochee Bowling Club
The First Half Disaster: Muirhead & Birkhill’s heavy-hitting rink of
Lead: Ian Stirton,
Third: Ed Mason, and
Skip : Jim Westwater
The Muirhead & Birkhill team absolutely dominated the opening exchanges.
On the second end Skipper Ramsay Kyle had the option of taking a one shot result, or deliver a simplistic foot on conversion for 3 shots, his team agreed, its early days, just play it if confidence is high. The Conversion failed and Dudhope lost -1 in the second end, this plagued the skipper for the later ends, as they continued to lose end after end.
Dudhope was completely locked out for the first 7 ends, facing a 13–0 mountain.
A single shot on the 8th end broke the duck for Dudhope bc, but by the conclusion of End 10,
Dudhope sat at a seemingly insurmountable 15–1 deficit.
Bryan said to Ramsay "last end" (end 13) and I replied, maybe when we head back to the clubhouse.
(So consideration was given to give up with three ends of the game to be completed)
The Dudhope Surge:
With their backs completely against the wall, the tactical shift kicked in.
Lead: Billy Vaughan,
Third: Bryan Kenyon, and
Skip: Ramsay Kyle
There was an opportunity for Bryan to try a conversion shot, onto an opponents bowl to snooker shot onto a Dudhope bowl, trailing the jack into space, lying three shots, the skip Ramsay managed to draw two more to add to this making a five and began to find their precise lengths on the Lochee turf.
Starting on End 11, the mighty Dudhope completely shut down the Muirhead rink, keeping them to absolute zeroes for the remainder of the match.
The Final Push:
Steady counts of 2 and 1 chipped away at the lead, but it was the massive 5-shot haul on End 13 that put the fright into the opposition, pulling the score to 15–9. Following it up with a clinical 4 on the penultimate end left Dudhope trailing by just two shots going into the final end.
The Winning End:
Lying two for the draw and staring down an extra end,
I prepared my lead for the coin toss, asking Bill to refuse the jack and help the team to have last delivery, but before this, the pressure obviously forced an unusual mistake from the City of Dundee champion Jim Westwater. His final bowl unfortunately caught one of Billy's short bowls, promoting it into the head to hand Dudhope a spectacular 3-shot count, sealing an unbelievable 16–15 victory right at the death.
Dudhope completely locked out a team of multiple champions for the final five ends of a quarter-final. That is a masterclass in staying patient, trusting your delivery, and never giving up.
