📰 | MATCH REPORT VS EDINBURGH UNIVERSITY

DUNBAR UNITED 2 EDINBURGH UNIVERSITY 0

After a run of away matches, Dunbar finally got back to playing a home league game before returning to their travels next Saturday. Aaron Hamilton was suspended following his sending off against Edinburgh South and Shay Gillon, a recent signing from Musselburgh Athletic’s Under 20 side, made his debut in goal. Harvey Chisholm, Jay Miller and captain Grant Thomson were also missing but Jason Craig and Conner Duthie were back in the squad.

Edinburgh University nearly had the perfect start when Ross Young was quickly closed down after just 3 minutes and his stray back-pass went out for a Edinburgh University corner which was thankfully headed away from danger by Bob Berry. A couple of minutes later, Millar Ritchie was penalised for a slide tackle on the edge of the box. Ryan Hutchison fired in the free kick and Shay Gillon was well behind the effort. A minute or so later, Aaron Congalton was shown the first yellow card of a niggly and tetchy afternoon that probably deserved more bookings than we finally got.

With 12 minutes played, Dunbar had a golden chance to open the scoring. Jason Craig won the ball on the right wing and found Mackenzie Lawler. The former Heart of Midlothian B striker was fouled on the edge of the box but Mr Buchan played a very good advantage which came to Ross Young, who saw his shot on goal well saved by Ben Taylor using his legs.

In the 15th minute, Cameron Forbes earned a yellow card for a clattering challenge on Ross Young. We now had both number 6’s on a booking with more than three quarters of the game to play.

Daniel Hall then had a chance for Dunbar, weaving his way into a shooting position but from the right his shot was well watched by Taylor in the University goal.

With 23 minutes on the clock, Edinburgh University were handed a gilt-edged opportunity to open the scoring. A through ball in the middle caught out the Dunbar defence and Shay Gillon came rushing off his line and took out James Mulholland just inside the box. The debutant keeper was booked and a penalty kick was awarded. Duncan Proudfoot’s penalty was superbly saved by Gillon and made amends for conceding the spot kick.

Approaching half time, Ross Young had an attempt on goal, his swivel and lob ended up with Taylor backpedalling to catch the lob. Then just before the half-time whistle, Dunbar were awarded a penalty of their own after MACKENZIE LAWLER was tripped by Max Black in the penalty area as he tried to turn his marker. The striker dusted himself down and took the spot kick himself and sent the keeper the wrong way from the spot.

Neither side made any changes at half time as Duncan Proudfoot got the second half underway. As early as the 47th minute, Edinburgh University had won an early corner. Ryan Hutchison was making a real nuisance of himself by pushing and pulling the young debutant goalkeeper every which way before the ball was even delivered. Thankfully, for Shay Gillon, Bob Berry was on hand to make sure that he got the space he needed to recover his composure.

From an Aaron Congalton corner, Bob Berry tried to head home from near the back post but after a stramash™ in the box, the opportunity went begging as the ball was cleared. Then, just a minute later, Dunbar had another great chance to extend the lead when a lovely piece of play by Daniel Hall down the left wing ended up with a low cross into the box but Darren Handling scuffed his shot wide. Then Ross Young found his name added to the booking list for, what many thought, was a tame foul in the centre of the pitch.

Darren Smith decided to ring the changes on the hour mark with Conner Duthie, Gregor Goldie and Willis Hare replacing John Ward, Mackenzie Lawler and Jason Craig. Tobie Craig was sent on for Edinburgh University with Jakey Whittle making way.

Almost immediately, Gregor Goldie nearly made an impression. He ran down the right and sent a ball into the centre for Dan Hall to run onto but as he was about to shoot, two Uni defenders appeared from nowhere to close him down and the chance was lost.

With 66 minutes on the clock, there were a bit of handbags that could have seen more players booked or possibly sent off. Daniel Hall was flattened in full flight running down the right wing by Mason Renton. Hall’s response was to jump to his feet, give the Edinburgh University captain a push and go toe to toe in a staring match with him. Players from both sides quickly stepped in to separate the pair, helping to prevent the situation from escalating. The student's captain, Mason Renton, was booked and the poor free kick came to nothing. A moment later, another chance did fall the way of Daniel Hall but his effort flew over the bar.

Sam Hill was sent on in the place of Mason Renton, probably before he was sent off, and the captain’s armband was passed to Ryan Hutchison for Uni. Conner Duthie then produced a diving save from Ben Taylor as Dunbar continued to press for a second goal to settle the home crowd’s nerves.

Willis Hare was genuinely lucky not to be penalised for a shove on Ryan Hutchison inside the penalty box. The Uni player went down in the box like he’d been shot, once too many times, and the officials told him to get up and start playing football. Minutes later, he too was hauled off by the University management team. His walk to the sidelines saw him and James Mulholland replaced by John Cloherty and Kai Austin. Jacob Shyngle became the third University captain of the afternoon.

With 10 minutes remaining, Dunbar did finally get their second goal. Gregor Goldie won a free kick out wide on the right wing after Jacob Shyngle was guilty of holding his shirt. Conner Duthie fired the free kick across to the back post for DEAN WHITSON to send a looping header up and over the Uni keeper and into the net. A couple of minutes later, Whitson saw a fourth yellow card shown towards a Dunbar player for the afternoon. His caution coming because he was deemed to be time wasting at a Dunbar free kick, the truth probably more like that there was not enough movement amongst the United players in the box.

Brandon Nicol had a last hurrah chance for Edinburgh University from the edge of the box after a neat turn and shot but his effort brought out a superb reaction save from Shay Gillon in the Dunbar goal, touching the ball over the bar to maintain his clean sheet. And with literally the last kick of the ball, Dunbar sent on Callum McEwan in place of fellow sub Gregor Goldie but within 10 seconds on the pitch, the match was over and Dunbar retain second place in the league behind leaders Camelon.

A good result against a streetwise Edinburgh University side. Dunbar are back on their travels next week with a visit to West of Scotland side Darvel, managed by former Rangers cult hero Nacho Novo, for a South Challenge Cup tie.

🍾 | TODAY’S MAN OF THE MATCH VS EDINBURGH UNIVERSITY

It’s another three points for The Seasiders on their return to New Countess Park!

Goals from Mackenzie Lawler from the penalty spot and a second-half header from Deano Whitson secured the victory, while new signing Shay Gillon marked his debut with a superb penalty save.

There were plenty of standout performances in a good Dunbar display against a fit Edinburgh University side.

The Seasiders are back on the road next Saturday 5th of September as they travel to Ayrshire to face West of Scotland Premier Division side Darvel in the second round of the South Challenge Cup.
