Today we welcomed Steventon Reserves to the rec for game 3 of the new season.
We started the game slowly, and struggled to get any rhythm going. Misplaced passes and not being on the front foot meant we were 2nd best In the opening exchanges. Ben in goal made a couple of smart saves, along with Fins pace to intercept kept us in the game. Game changed by a dubious red card for skipper Will, who obstructed the attacker as he ran across goal, advantage was played and Ben came out on top of the 1 to 1 to save the effort. Play was then pulled back and the red card shown!

With a reshuffle Dylan was introduced with forward Alfie dropping into right back to steady the lads. We saw out the next 15/20 minutes with Ben keeping us in the game with some commanding goalkeeping and tipping a goal bound effort over the bar. Half time whistle came and we had the chance to regroup.

Harry came on at right back for Johnny who again had worked his socks of for 45 minutes to get back to match fitness, and Joel for Mason who didn’t have much luck in the middle today. We started the 2nd half much better, passing moves from back to front were now working and we were finding Speckels up top who had a couple of snap shots but couldn’t find the net. Joel had added that physical presence and didn’t allow them free headers and time on the ball. The back 4 looked solid and in control with Burkey at left back proving impossible to beat. Again Ben came to our rescue when he saved with his feet when 1 v 1. Ellis took a knock and had to come off so Wazza came on with 35 to go. He made an instant impact with his energy, trickery and quick feet moving the ball. We took the lead when the ball fell to Wazza just inside the box, he smashed it on the half volley into the net for his 1st competitive goal. We then had them on the ropes, Speckels brought a smart save from the keeper but it was one way traffic. The 2nd came when Fin found himself just outside the box, and his shot evaded the diving keeper to find the back of the net. We could have made it 3 with a handball in the box resulted in a penalty. Alfie stepped up but this shot was saved low down to keep it at 2-0. Corey came on for Tom for the last 20 who had dictated the play in the 2nd half. We saw out the game to get the 3 points. Brilliant effort from all of the lads to get the win today, playing almost 60 minutes with 10 players.

Special mention to Fosty who unfortunately made way after the red card and we had to reshuffle, keep your head up and try to take the positives of 3 points 💙

MOTM today was Ben in goal, stopped them from scoring 4 or 5 times before we got the 1st, commanding display today for only his 2nd game in men’s football since he decided to put the gloves back on 🏅💙⚽️

Today we welcomed Chalgrove reserves to the rec for our first home game of the season.
After last weeks disappointment the lads were determined to move on and put it right, and today we did it in Style! We opened the scoring inside 10 minutes when a ball found Burkey bursting into the box from right back, awesome first touch and a finish a striker would be proud of past the keeper to give us the lead. We continued to control the game, Tom, Ellis and Ben in midfield were dictating the play. We soon doubled our advantage with a smart finish from Mason to open his account for his second spell at the club.

The returning Johnny was looking dangerous on the wing and could have increased our lead but for a horrible bobble as he hit his shot at the keeper. Alfie on the other wing had the fullback on the ropes but the 3rd wouldn’t come. Ben in goal making his competitive debut for the Devs controlled everything sent his way, the back 4 of Felix, Will, Fin and Burkey dealt with everything in front of him.

Half time and Anthony replaced the knackered Johnny who played for the first game in 6 months after travelling. It was then one way traffic! Alfie found the keeper in inspiring form with 2 good chances before he thumped the 3rd home to give us breathing space. Harry came on for Tom shortly after and got on the scoresheet with a debut goal. They pulled 1 back from a corner we failed to clear. On came Fosty who’s mazy run and cross from left back to left wing should have increased our lead only the keeper keeping it out. Anthony was causing havoc with his close control and strength but we couldn’t convert. Jack Warren came on for Mason who had put a shift in at #9 and linked the play, Alfie broke into the box and was pulled down. He got up and converted the spot kick for his 3nd of the game. Dylan replaced Fin and we continued to dominate until the final whistle for the win. Brilliant performance today by all of the lads, could have had double figures on another day.
MOTM today was Fin, won everything, and I mean everything! 20 hour flight yesterday and 70 minutes played today is fully deserved 🏅💙

Brilliant response from everyone that played today, and has set the standards for next week.
Big shout to the lads that missed out today as we had enough players for 3 teams, not Two. Really good to see those of you supporting the team 💙
