It's been a rather busy time for the club this weekend.

Dexter , Katie , Noah , Sophie and Logan took part in the Western area randoori session held at Bradley Stoke. This session is fantastic for training with new partners and meeting new people in the area.

Ollie was competing at a senior event in High Wycomb. He entered two groups at 66kg and 71kg and came away with a Gold and a Silver, as well 50 points towards his Dan grade. Well done, Ollie! 🥋

Sam decided he would do something slightly different and entered the Somerset Open Jiu Jitsu event and promptly won a gold medal there. Devizes Judo Club are obviously teaching good newazza techniques. Back last year, one of our seniors, Mitchell, who has a jiu jitsu background won a gold in his first ever judo competition up in Kidderminster, so it's great to mix the two martial arts together sometimes. Well done, Sam and extra kudos for wearing your Devizes top on the podium.

The Friday night training sessions were again very busy at the club with just under 50 judoka on the mat including coaches. With that many judoka you definitely need a large mat area, that's why we have the biggest mat training area in Wiltshire with 144m2. The first session, for the 5 to 10 year old class, dealt with newaza techniques, specifically the Yoko-shiho-gatame hold down. Finn was the oustanding young judoka on the busy first session so went away with the trophy for Judoka of the week 🏆. We found out afterwards it was his birthday so he was given the bumps. Well done and happy birthday, Finn.

The second session for the 10 to adult judoka went through the "Devizes roll" newaza (groundwork) technique. Lots of randori, both newaza and tachiwaza, later in the session meant lots of sweaty foreheads at the end.

The next session at the club is the two hour training session on Monday between 6.30pm and 8.30pm for all judoka aged 10 to adult.

We have our 6th Devizes Mini-Mon on Sunday 18th October. This is a great, entry level event into competitive judo. All children will be in a maximum pool of four, all participants receive a nice medal, however, the colour of that medal depends on the competitor 🥉🥉🥈🥇

We have had a bit (a lot!) of trouble with the online booking system on the BJA entry form this time around. We have contacted the BJA regarding this and their advice, if you are having trouble, was to clear your memory cache or use an incognito tab. If you do have problems, please contact the BJA. It's not a great situation to be in, especially a month away from the closing date of this event but there's not much we can do now.

The first Monday two hour session back after the August break saw 15 judoka on the mat with quite a few members still on holiday. After a decent warm up and practicing ukemi techniques we started doing some technical work, primarily on the morote seoi nage throw (two-hand shoulder throw). We have had quite a few dads training with their sons and daughters over the last five years but last night we had a "Judo Mum" who not only did the entire two hour session but did exceptionally well in her very first foray into Judo. Well done, Kristal. If any other mum or dad wants to join us on a Monday or Friday night (second session), you are very welcome. 🥋

Devizes Carnival was an absolute blast! This is the first time we have joined the procession in a decade and we absolutely loved it. Our club President, Roy, built a fantastic float that was joined by 25+ young judoka and parents (and a lovely labrador) around the streets of Devizes in front of literally thousands of people. Somewhere between 800 and 900 of our leaflets were distributed to the cheering crowd as we crawled around the centre of town (no change there then 😁). We were also lucky to be following an excellent samba band who were really energetic and extremely enthusiastic. A fantastic all-round effort by all the Devizes judo club family. The most surreal moment of the evening was seeing the Devizes Town Mayor fanning herself using one of our leaflets. If you have any photographs of the carnival, please post them below.

Wow, what a busy first night back! 30 Children in the first session and 13 junior and senior judoka in the second session. Nice to see some new faces at the club. The first session went through various ne-waza techniques and the second session dealt with tachi-waza. Erin was the judoka of the week in the first session but unfortunately we didn't get the photograph - she still took home the trophy though. 🏆 Well done, Erin.

Next session is on Monday: 6.30pm to 8.30pm for the 10 years to senior judoka.
