The human back contains roughly 40 muscles, organized into three layers: superficial, intermediate, and deep.
This is a brief overview on seven of the muscles in the back.
The postural muscles, Erector Spinae are worked when we do extension in exercises like the Dart and Cobra.
Then the Postvertebral muscles, Multifidus, Rotatores, Interspinales & Intertransversarii are worked when we move throughout our day and in class. They strengthen and support the spine as we move through all spinal movements, such as rotation, flexion and extension. So Waist Twists, the Cat and Extended Cat help strengthen these muscles.
The muscles around the ribs, Transversus Thoracis and Levatores Costatum are worked when we twist in exercises such as Obliques curl ups, Threading the needle and Side reach.
Pilates works all of the muscles of the spine, the ones you can feel/see and those that are deep inside you.
