Why and Where We Hold Tension in the Body
Tension is often the body’s way of responding to stress, emotion, pressure or the need to protect us. When we feel overwhelmed, anxious or unsafe, the nervous system can put the body into a state of readiness—muscles tighten, breathing changes and we become more alert.
We tend to hold this tension in familiar places. The jaw may clench when we are holding back words or carrying stress. The shoulders and neck often tighten when we feel responsible for too much or are constantly “on”. The chest can feel restricted when emotions or anxiety affect our breathing. The stomach and abdomen may grip when we feel nervous, uncertain or unable to relax. And the hips, lower back and pelvic area can carry tension when we have been bracing, sitting for long periods or feeling a need for control and stability.
Sometimes the tension is so familiar that we stop noticing it. We may only realise how much we have been holding when we finally slow down, breathe deeply, move gently or rest.
The body is constantly communicating with us. Rather than seeing tension as something to fight, we can become curious about it: Where am I holding? What might I be responding to? And what would help my body feel safe enough to soften?
Yoga and Pilates can both be useful for easing muscular tension, improving mobility, and building better body awareness.
If you’re using them specifically for tension relief, gentle, controlled movements and breathing are often more helpful than pushing into intense stretches.
After 30 years of teaching, I’ve learned that yoga is so much more than the shapes we make with our bodies. It has taught me to listen—to myself, to others, and to the quiet wisdom that is often beneath the noise. I’ve learned that every body, every breath and every day is different, and that there is no perfect pose, only an invitation to be present with what is.
Most of all, yoga has taught me that change happens through patience, consistency, and compassion.
I’m still learning, still discovering, and still humbled by the practice. Teaching has reminded me that I don’t have to have all the answers; I simply have to create the space for people to discover something for themselves. That, for me, is the real gift of yoga.
Over the past 20 years, yoga has taught me so much. Not just on the mat, but in everyday life. I'm still learning every single day which is still my passion.
🧘 Live in the present. Worrying about the past or future only steals today.
🌿 Breathe. Never underestimate the power of a few deep breaths to calm your mind and reset your body.
💛 Observe, reflect and grow. Self-awareness is where real change begins.
🤝 Lead with kindness. Treat others with compassion, honesty and respect. We could all do with a little more of that.
🍃 Let go. Whether it's negative thoughts, toxic relationships or even clutter in your home, making space feels incredibly freeing.
🙏 Practice gratitude. There is always something to be thankful for, even on the hardest days.
🌱 Keep learning. Life teaches us something every day if we're willing to notice. Sometimes it's as simple as a lovely conversation with a stranger.
✨ Enjoy the journey. We spend so much time chasing the destination that we forget to appreciate where we are now.
❤️ Remember we're all connected. Yoga isn't just about movement; it's about connection – with ourselves, each other and the world around us.
For me, yoga has never been about the perfect pose. It's about finding peace, connection and becoming a little better than I was yesterday.
If this encourages just one person to roll out their mat, pause, or simply take a deep breath today, then sharing it has been worthwhile.
Namaste 🙏

"You'll never change your life until you change something you do daily. The secret to your success is found in your daily routine".
John C Maxwell
Some people love to have a solid daily routine, while others shudder at the thought of having a predictable schedule. During times of great stress, however, maintaining structure and routine can help you feel more organized and in control.
Having a routine can be helpful at any time, particularly if you are trying to establish healthy habits, but these routines can be particularly important when aspects of your life feel uncertain.

The greatness of yoga lies in the fact that even the simplest-looking poses can offer incredible health benefits.
One beautiful example is Tadasana (Mountain Pose). 🌿
Also known as Palm Tree Pose or Tadasana (ताडासन) in Sanskrit, this posture encourages you to reach upwards, creating a feeling of length, strength and openness—almost as though you are stretching towards the heavens.
Some of the many benefits of Tadasana include:
✨ Gently stretches the muscles and nerves,
supporting healthy movement throughout the
body.
✨ Can be beneficial for those with sciatica when
practised under the guidance of an
experienced teacher.
✨ Improves balance, concentration, and overall
alertness.
✨ Strengthens the toes, ankles, knees, legs,
lower abdomen and buttocks.
✨ Encourages better posture and teaches the art
of standing with ease and alignment.
✨ Builds strength through the legs, shoulders,
and neck while creating stability throughout
the body.
Although it may appear simple, Tadasana is a powerful foundation for many other yoga postures and a wonderful reminder that sometimes the smallest movements create the biggest changes.
To enjoy the full benefits of this and every yoga posture, always practise under the guidance of a qualified and experienced teacher.
Much love
Janie 🙏❤️
