In this two hour introductory session we will learn how to settle the busy mind so we can see thoughts as they arise. We will learn ways to let the thoughts pass by without engaging in them by bringing the mind back to a focal point such as the breath. If you are curious about meditation this is a great way to start your journey.
£15 pp. Book online at www.eskbankyogalounge.com

Many often think that meditation involves clearing the mind of all thoughts. Well that is not going to happen…the mind is designed to think. With mindful meditation we learn to notice what we are thinking and then discover ways to bring the mind to a focal point (such as the breath) and watch the thought flow by. Check out our INTRODUCTION TO MINDFUL MEDITATION workshop on Sunday 15th November if you are curious to learn more.

I see a lot of chat on social media about what is the best kind of exercise… comparing yoga with Pilates and running and lifting weights and so on. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying that any is better than the other. In fact I’m a fan of incorporating a variety of types of exercise as each has its benefits. But we should understand that yoga is not just a form of exercise. Advanced yoga is not getting into the fancy poses and pushing through complicated vinyasas. ( much as I love that too). It is moving into the practices that come after the exercise part…pranayama and meditation. I feel that these practices are getting lost in the desire to get a good work out.

I don’t like this class you know….she said… As I resigned myself to not being everyone’s cup of tea she continued….but they are So good for me.

I’m NOT going in the chair you know….she said with a twinkle in her eye.

What chair???

She continued to elaborate… At some point as we get older we take to a chair and don’t get back out of it…. We let everyone come to us in the chair. We stop moving. She was spot on.

This is why it’s so important to exercise..whether you like it or not… whether it’s walking, swimming, yoga, or sessions in the gym we need to keep going.
