How gutsy is the Heiniger Opal Horse, really? 👀

We decided to give it the ultimate test: a thick coat paired with a Covercoat blade.

If you’ve never used one before, Covercoat blades leave around 4.8mm of hair behind to create a more natural, summer-coat finish. Because they’re wider and have to work through all that thick hair while leaving a longer finish, they put much more resistance on the clipper than a standard blade. If the machine doesn’t have enough power behind it, it can quickly start to struggle.

We think it did pretty well… 😍

HOYS is nearly here… but so is that fluffy winter coat 👀

If your horse’s winter coat is starting to come through, but you want to keep that smart, natural summer-coat finish, a Covercote or Covercoat blade could be exactly what you need.

Often called a skimming blade, it removes the longer, fluffy hairs while leaving approximately 4.8–5mm of coat behind. This makes it perfect for a final tidy-up before HOYS, particularly for greys and pink-skinned horses where a close clip may look too harsh.

Good news… the Aesculap Favorita II is finally back in stock! 🙌🐶

There’s a reason this one is such a favourite with professional dog groomers and veterinary teams. It’s quiet, stays cool while you’re working and has plenty of power for all different coat types.

The adjustable tensioning system means you can adapt the blade to suit the density of the coat, and there’s a choice of resharpenable Favorita blades available from 1mm to 12mm.

It also has a four-metre cable, so you can keep working without worrying about batteries running out.

Just a quick note that blades aren’t included, allowing you to choose the most suitable length for the work you do.

We know this video might divide opinions… 👀

Whenever we share a horse being hogged, or roached, we receive a lot of negative comments. But there are plenty of genuine reasons why an owner may choose to remove a mane.

For some horses, it’s part of the correct turnout for their type or class, particularly show cobs. For others, it may be more practical for polo, hunting, driving or regular work where a thick mane can become tangled or get in the way.

There can also be health and management reasons. A horse may have rubbed or damaged its mane due to itching, require easier access to the skin for treatment, or simply be more comfortable without a very thick mane to manage. In these cases, hogging can give the mane a fresh, even start as it grows back.

It may not be everyone’s personal preference, but that doesn’t mean the horse isn’t loved or carefully looked after. As long as it’s done safely and with the horse’s comfort in mind, it’s ultimately a decision for the owner 😊

A quick reminder when sending your blades to us 📦

Please include your order number beginning with CS inside the parcel. We need this to match your blades to your sharpening order. A confirmation code isn’t the same and won’t allow us to find your details.

We receive a surprising number of blades with absolutely no information included, so please double-check before sealing your parcel!

Blades should be packaged securely in a padded, sealed envelope. For even better protection, we recommend using one of our blade boxes to keep them safe while travelling through the post.

Please also send your parcel using a tracked service and keep your tracking details. This is the quickest and most accurate way to check if your blades have arrived, so please check your tracking before calling us for an update.

Unfortunately, we cannot accept responsibility for blades that are lost or damaged on their way to us.

“I only clip one horse twice a year. Which clippers do I need?” 🤔

It’s one of the questions we hear all the time, but the number of horses you clip is only part of the answer!

We’ll also ask:

🐴 What breed and coat type is your horse?
✂️ Are you doing a full clip or just a smaller bib or trace clip?
🔋 Would you prefer cordless or mains-powered clippers?
🔊 Is your horse nervous or sensitive to noise?
💷 What budget are you working with?

For one finer-coated horse clipped a couple of times each year, a light or medium-duty machine may be all you need. For a very thick or coarse coat, or a full clip, you may still need something more powerful.

That’s why we don’t recommend the same machine to everyone. Tell us about your horse and what you need to clip, and we’ll help you find the right one 😊

If you need another set of blades but don’t need them to look brand new, our Preloved collection could save you a little money and give a perfectly usable set of blades a second life.

These blades have been used before, so they may have cosmetic marks or signs of wear, but every set is professionally cleaned, sharpened and checked by our Clippersharp team before being made available.

The collection currently includes:

Did you know that clipper blades do come to the end of their life?

A lot of people don’t realise clipper blades don’t last forever, and sharpening isn’t unlimited either. Each sharpen takes a tiny bit of metal away, and eventually the blade reaches a point where it just can’t be done again properly.

That’s why, at Clippersharp, if your blade is coming in for its final sharpen, we’ll pop a little sticker on it that says “Last time” ✅ So you’re not caught out with an unsharpenable blade!
