šŸ’ššŸ„‹Goodbye and good luck, Callum šŸ’ššŸ„‹

Callum has made the difficult decision to step away from NGMA after spending over 8 years with the club!

Callum started as a timid, shy little boy. It’s been a pleasure and a privilege to watch him grow into such an incredible young man. He’s achieved his black belt, earned himself a place on our competition team and bagged plenty of medals in competitions!

It’s mad to believe that little boy in the picture can now pick his sensei up in a fireman’s lift šŸ˜‚

Callum feels like it’s the right time for him to step away from the club and focus on other things. We’re devastated to see him go but respect his decision!

Please join me and wishing Callum all of the best for the future…

Callum, please don’t be a stranger come back and see us in the future and thank you so much for being part of what we do for such a long time.

I’m behalf of the whole NGMA we will miss you!

🄊 COUCH TO YELLOW BELT IS BACK! šŸ„‹

Right… we’re doing it again! šŸ‘Š

After the first Couch to Yellow Belt course went so well, I’ve decided it’s time to open the doors for another group of complete beginners.

You don’t need to be fit.
You don’t need to be strong.
You don’t need any martial arts experience.
And you definitely don’t need to know what you’re doing when you walk through the door.

You just need to be willing to give it a go!

Over 6 weeks, the course will take you through everything starting with the absolute basics, then gradually building your confidence, fitness, technique and knowledge until you’re ready for your Yellow Belt grading on the last week of the programme.

And you’ll be doing it alongside a group of people who are all starting from the same place. It’s relaxed and 100% beginner-friendly.

If you’ve ever thought:

ā€œI’d love to try kickboxing… but I’m really not sure where to start.ā€
or
ā€œI’d be absolutely rubbish at it.ā€
or
ā€œI’ll start when I get myself a bit fitter first.ā€

Then this is for YOU!

🄊 WHAT’S INCLUDED?

šŸ‘‰ For just Ā£69.99, you’ll get:

🄊 6 x dedicated Couch to Yellow Belt training sessions focused specifically on beginners.

šŸ„‹ 6 weeks of unlimited access to our mainstream kickboxing sessions — giving you the opportunity to attend up to an extra 12 classes during the course.

šŸ  5 short, beginner-friendly kickboxing & cardio-based home workouts so you can practise and boost your fitness at home.

šŸ„— A simple nutrition & healthy habits guide to help you make better choices around the kinds of foods and snacks you consume based on your goals.

And then, at the end of the 6 weeks…

šŸ„‹ Your Yellow Belt grading, certificate & full evaluation… ALL INCLUDED IN THE COST.

Excuse #147:

ā€œI’m too old to start kickboxingā€

You’re not too old.
You’re just new.

As long as your body works (for the most part anyway šŸ˜…) and you’re physically able to move, get your hands up and lift your foot at least 6 inches off the floor…

Then I’m afraid your ā€œI’m too oldā€ card doesn’t work here…

I’ll admit, kickboxing can sometimes come with a bit of a stigma.

You see super-fit, muscly men knocking ten bells out of each other and think:

ā€œYeah… that’s definitely not for me.ā€ šŸ˜‚

And at the elite level, that is what kickboxing can look like.

But here’s the thing…

The people you see competing at the highest level have usually spent years, sometimes decades developing their skills. For many of them, it’s a pathway they’ve been on since childhood.

Grassroots kickboxing is a completely different story.

The door is open for people who want to start something new a little later in life.

For people who want a bit of ā€œme timeā€.
For people who want to get a little fitter.
For people who fancy trying something completely different.

And yes… even for people who have absolutely no idea what they’re doing yet. šŸ˜…

You don’t have to be a kickboxer to start kickboxing.

You just have to be willing to start.

I’m incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to positively impact children on a large scale.

Of course, a huge part of that is through teaching karate.

But, I also go into schools and deliver talks, courses and workshops on things like confidence, resilience, mindset and positive behaviour.

The Confidence Muscle is a concept I’ve taken from my most recent workshop…

ā€œThe Confidence Kickstart Experienceā€

This concept teaches primary school-aged children that we aren’t born with confidence…

But we aren’t born without it either…

It teaches them that confidence is something we need to practise. And the more we practise it, the more we (and the people around us) notice the progress.

Think about it:
- If you want bigger muscles, you have to train in the gym.
- If you want your passing in football to improve, you have to practise passing.
- If you want your kicks in karate to get higher, you have to work on your flexibility.

It’s the same with confidence. If you want to be confident, then you have to practice being confident.

Confidence grows by stepping outside of our comfort zone, even just by a little bit. I call this the growth zone…

(More about that in another post)

But for now,

Encourage your child to view things that scare them a little bit as the moments where their confidence has the chance to grow.

That’s where the growth happens šŸ’š

šŸŽ‰šŸ„³šŸŽ HAPPY BIRTHDAY ASHLEIGH! šŸŽšŸ„³šŸŽ‰

Over 9 years with the club… from a little girl, to a young lady, to becoming a black belt and being one of our most experienced junior coaches!

It’s been amazing watching her grow over the years, and we’re so lucky to have her as part of the NGMA team.

I hope you’re having the best day ever! Please join me in wishing Ashleigh the happiest of birthdays! šŸŽ‰

20th September - National Wife Appreciation Day ā¤ļø

There seems to be a special appreciation day for every day in the year nowadays… but I saw this one, and couldn’t move past it without posting.

Do I tell Holly how much I appreciate all she does at NGMA?
Yes, but probably not enough!

She was the first person who truly believed in me when I said I was going to open MY OWN martial arts school. She moved 450 miles with me because she knew that together we’d make NGMA work.

When we moved from Cornwall to Norfolk, she went straight into full time work paying most of the bills whilst I worked part time stacking shelves at Tesco and put every spare minute I had into building NGMA.

This photo was taken over 10 years ago, on our ā€œBIG LAUNCH NIGHTā€ at St Martins church in Cromer. We were just 22 years old and so excited!!!

No one came.

Fast forward 11 years… she’s left full time work and now works part time with NGMA around raising our 2 sons, running side businesses and drawing and painting incredible artwork!

Whilst I’m smack bang in the middle of everything that happens at NGMA naturally I get a lot of the limelight, but honestly… I couldn’t do any of it without her!

She truly is the unsung hero at NGMA and here is the public appreciation she deserves.

Hoping this is me off the hook for the next 12 months šŸ˜‚šŸ˜…

Years of coaching children has prepared me for this exact moment. šŸ˜‚

Meltdowns happen. Kids have big feelings sometimes. Part of the job is knowing when to step in, when to give them a minute, and when to just keep calm and carry on.

Nothing to panic about. We’ve seen it before, Infact we’ve probably seen worse šŸ˜…. We give them the support they need and help them to manage their feelings.
And when they’re ready… we carry on šŸ„‹

When adults first consider starting kickboxing, there always seem to be so many barriers to entry.

Enrolling our children can feel like such a simple, straightforward decision…

But when it comes to starting something new for ourselves, it can sometimes feel like the universe is out to get us. Suddenly, there are 101 reasons why we can’t.

Too busy. Don’t have time. Have to work. Too tired. Don’t have the confidence. Feeling anxious…

The list goes on.

But by far one of the biggest reasons people don’t feel comfortable starting kickboxing is because they don’t feel fit enough.

Here’s one thing I’d really love people to understand…

Kickboxing is about progression. It’s about setting goals, working towards them and achieving things you never thought you could.

One thing I often say to parents is:

ā€œWould you hold off sending your child to school until they felt more clever?ā€

Of course not.

Kids aren’t expected to be clever when they first arrive at school. That’s why they’re there.

And you’re not expected to be fit when you first turn up to kickboxing.

That’s why you’re there.

Your child gets in the car after class…

ā€œMum, guess what? We did this thing, and then Jack did this, and then I nearly fell over but didn’t, and then I kicked a pad… and guess what? Then I punched it too and then you’ll never guess what happened? I drank all my drink!ā€

And I know it can seem like they’re going on and on and on aaaaannnnd on… And after a long day parenting, working, mind numbing chores and endlessly spinning every plate possible. Finding enthusiasm to talk about yet another karate class isn’t exactly priority number one at the time…

But let me tell you something….

Those conversations are more important than you may ever realise ā¤ļø

It might seem like they’re waffling on and on, but to them, they’re sharing something they’re excited about. Something that’s important to them. With the people they care about more than anybody else on this planet 🄹

And… When children feel like the people around them care about what they’re doing, they’re more likely to feel proud of their progress, enjoy the experience and want to keep coming back.

If you want your child to really take this far; learn the skills, gain the confidence, pass the gradings, win the trophies and achieve goals which may seem unimaginable at first…

Then these car journeys home play a bigger part in this than it seems… šŸ’ššŸ„‹

So maybe it shouldn’t be…
ā€œPut your seatbelt on we’re in a rushā€

Instead…
ā€œWhat on Earth is a reverse punchā€¦ā€
