With rain once again calling games off across South Wales the previous day, Wick woke up to glorious sunshine over the village green as the boys looked to get back to winning ways after the defeat to Llantwit Major the previous weekend.

With Captain Russ away on an under 11s rugby tour (as a parent, not playing…I’m told), it was over to stand in captain Steve to take over the unenviable task of pulling together 11 players. After a morning of hokey-cokey with players in-out-in-out and with thanks to young Sam, Owen and the sheriff of the Vale, Ben Wade for stepping in last minute, Wick had 11 and it was game on.

Wick were batting first but as the match reporter was sitting on a train somewhere around Bristol at the time we don’t know who won the toss, but since it wasn’t Russell we can assume Steve won and Wick were batting.
I’m told that Ben and Steve opened and both fell on 8 runs a piece bringing Tom and his father and Wick debutant, Jason to the crease. We can assume that both played some good cricket (you can fill in the gaps in your own minds) as by the time the match reporter arrived, the Wick ship had been steadied, and the home side were 76/3 at the break.
Owen, having sauntered to the green fresh from a train from London and his sister’s hen do, started to make himself comfortable in his camping chair before being told he was in to bat next. With Tom out shortly after drinks and Owen still padding up, Amal was in alongside Jason who was ticking along nicely. A couple of shots later and Owen came to the crease with Amal caught for 4.

Owen, no doubt suffering from not being able to do his extensive warm up and visualisation routines, struggled to get the ball of the square and when he eventually did, he chipped it up and was caught for 3.

The rest of the Wick innings saw a big swinging Saurabh, a Boycott-esque Sam and a ‘he’s quite nippy isn’t he’ John come and go before Jason and incredibly unwell Gutsy brought the Wick innings to a close at 67 and 2 not out respectively. Wick posted an about par 164 from their 40 overs, enough to make a game of it but would be it enough to overcome the always competitive West End side?

With Gutsy’s health rapidly declining during tea he was sent home and newly installed Vale 4s Captain Jeff was subbed on. With no Gutsy to open the bowling Captain Steve elected to open with Tom and Gutsy’s greatest nemesis, Amal. Steve also opted to have Owen keep wicket, a bold choice considering Jason keeps wicket for the Wales over 55s first team – we can’t work that one out either.

Wick couldn’t have asked for a much better start to the innings as Tom and Amal ripped through the West End top order. Amal opened the innings with a maiden over only to be outdone by Tom who bowled a Wicket maiden in his. Amal didn’t have to wait long for his Wicket as in the next over as the remaining West End opener nicked one behind that was caught one handed by a diving Owen in a catch that could only be described as ‘a screamer’ (his words and not the words of the rest of the team). And as the old adage goes ‘one brings two’, Amal took his second wicket to leave the West End top order reeling.

There was no let up from the Wick attack as a wicket for Saurabh, his second in two games and another two from Tom left West end 5 down for 20 runs after 8 overs. Tenko and Steve managed to steady the ship for West End, batting out the overs and taking them to drinks at 39/7. But West End were all out for 55 in the 26th over, the rest of the Wickets were shared out with every other bowler taking a wicket each, from youngsters Ben, John and Sam to the evergreen Steve it was a fantastic bowling performance from the team to bring home an unexpected but comprehensive victory for Wick.

Takeaways from the game were:
- Two Fenn’s really are better than one
- Wick really need to work on their fielding and catching
- Why did Gutsy think coming to play when he was clearly on deaths door was a good idea!?
- Will the new club kit shop ever be ready!?

Whilst we may not know the answers to all of these questions, plenty of discussions were had over some roast potatoes and a few pints post-game at The Star Inn, Wick , thank you as always.

📅T20 Match – Thursday 30th July📅

Sunsets and Hangovers

That time of year when we have a few away games, a T20 game against local rivals Llancarfan next up for Wick, travelling to sun drenched Llantwit Major.

With the annual jolly boys day (and evening) out to watch the cricket (Hundred) in Cardiff the day before, the 6pm start time was still too early for several of the Wick normal contingent so reserves drafted in from Llantwit Cavaliers – many thanks to Stu, Tom and Sam. It should also be pointed out that Kenny and Ryan were available but unfortunately for the opposition. Although it was good to see Chris back in Wick white. Owz, Saurabh and Andy the only other survivors of the day before, meaning Wick XI was actually only ten.

Russ lost the toss and so we were asked to bowl first. Kenny doing the honourable thing and fielding for us. The ground at Llantwit is lovely but does suffer with pointing directly west and with a clear sky and setting sun was a slight issue for fielding (And later batting). In these games we usually retire at 25 (and come back if needed) and bowl 2 overs each (if everyone wants to).

Saurabh and Russ opening up, with Owz keeping wicket and already complaining that he couldn’t see it from one end. This was a pattern repeated throughout the innings. Several head gear and sunglasses changes (can you believe that his Elton John style sunglasses don’t fit under his helmet!) still didn’t make him happy, but they aren’t miracle workers so…

Saurabh struck second ball, good catch by Stu. This brought Ceri to the crease and he played some nice shots. Sam and Spencer bowling next. Good bowling but no wickets, run rate ticking along but a very fast outfield meaning anything past the inner fielders was 4. Ceri retiring at 25 not out.

Chris and Tom on next to bowl, Chris with his usual assortment of spin, flight, straight, crooked, short, long, wobbly and beamers. Good stuff but unlucky not to take a life wicket. Owz now suffering more bruises and using more curse words than Beti will ever know.
A little running mix up and good work by Saurabh led to a run out, then a change of bowlers, Stu and Andy.

At this point Kenny who was fielding at point the last time this intrepid reporter looked suddenly appeared in full batting kit walking to the crease – if anyone remembers Mr Ben cartoon from the telly it was just like that. Now everyone knows that when Wick players play for the opposition, they are a highly prized wicket, none more so that Kenny. After a couple of trade mark sweeps Kenny was bowled by Stu (from Llantwit) much to the frustration of all the Wick bowlers who wanted bragging rights. This brought Ryan (he of the Wick and Vale CC club) into bat. Facing Andy for the first time in their playing careers and immediately intimidated by his pace and bounce, Ok lack of is missing in that sentence.

Some say it was the skill and experience of the bowler seeing the batsman coming down the track, others that he is crap and can’t bowl straight, but on this occasion however Andy was victorious with Ryan soon departed, stumped off a ‘wide’ delivery (great work by Owz) for 10.

Amal on last (with Andy & Saurabh getting an extra over each from other end due to the 10 men). Amal joined the wicket takers as well with another running mix up leading to another run out as well – Llancarfan finished on a decent 111 for 8 off their 20 overs.

With the sun now close to setting and directly behind the bowlers arm, Llancarfan opted to open with Ryan (Fastest bowler) with the sun directly behind him. This may have had something to do with Wick opening with Spencer (Ryan’s dad) and Stu. Both batsmen struggled to see the ball, Stu falling to one that was just impossible to see. Owz out to the middle still struggling to see and still grumpy about it. This was made better by being hit by Ryan in a very sensitive spot (his tummy) whilst blinded. Owz sportingly threw his bat at Ryan but as normal missed. Spencer doing the sensible thing and batting one handed whist shielding his eyes with the other hand. It worked as he got to 28 and retired!

Owz soon departed after a whirlwind 2, to head straight home for an ice bath. Tom in and then Chris (after Spencer retired). Runs were coming but overs were passing as well. Tom out next and then soon after Chris. Bringing skipper Russ and Sam in, they built a decent partnership. They got us upto 94 after 17 overs before disaster struck and Russ was out, to yes you guessed it – Kenny. Saurabh in next looking to get on with it, Then Sam out bowled for 4 bringing Amal to the wicket with just 11 balls left and 18 required. With the sun now set, a chill and darkness were the enemy, which could be partly blamed for the Benny Hill style sketch that was an attempted run, ending with both at one end and the dismissal of Saurabh. This brought last man Andy to the crease with 6 balls left. Amal facing, quick 2 byes. Dot. Then an LBW shout that was given. Amal out. This brought a quickly repadded Spencer back in for the last 3 balls with just 11 runs needed for the win (10 for a draw). A quick ball, missed by the keeper led to a quickly run 3 byes from the first ball, then Ellis could only get a single from the penultimate ball. Leaving Spencer needing 6 to draw from the last. He didn’t and Llancarfan ran out winners by 5 runs.

A great game played in a friendly spirit throughout. I’m sure Owz will forgive Ryan at some stage.

🏏WICK CC VS F-TROOP T20 AND BRIDGEND CC
📅 20 AND 24 MAY

The Barrington double header – F Troop T20 & Bridgend 40 over match report double bill!

After a week off Wick were back in action for their first midweek T20 of the season against our greatest nemesis Wayne Barrington’s F Troop.

Historically Wick have approached this fixture with more than a bit of trepidation, having always struggled to get the elusive win against the Bridgend based titans of midweek cricket. This time, however, was different. Having finally had that albatross removed from around their neck with a historic win on the village green last year, there was hope in the air as we made the journey to Newbridge fields.
Wick’s winter recruitment once again paid dividends as James and Christian made their debuts for WCC, it’s been incredibly heartening to see so many new players join Wick in recent times but it’s caused some serious concern for Owen, so much so he’s looking at setting up a second team just to make sure he can still get a game!

A toss was held and Wick were bowling. It was an all-round solid bowling performance from Wick, with the highlights being Amal, Saurabh, Math and Tom all picking up wickets whilst going for less than 10 runs from their two overs. This went a long way to restricting the big hitting F troop batters and to balance the books after captain Russ, having gone for 15 in his first over, bravely gave himself a second and rewarded his own brave captaincy by only going for 13 in the second.

Aside from this and Wick’s catching leaving much to be desired, Wick managed to restrict F Troop to 119 off their 7 overs. A low total but on a tricky pitch, could it be enough?
Wick were confident as with Amal and Steve batting 10 and 11 respectively, we were batting deep. Opening with Math and Tom it was a tale of two halves as Math retired 25 not out whilst Tom was out for 4 from a ball that pitched and then rolled under his bat and into the stumps. Not to worry, it was Big Benny Wade in next, the boy has been on some form this season and today was no different, hitting an action packed 28 before he also retired.
With the two Blaengarw babes James and Christian coming and going for 9 and 8 respectively, this brought an incredibly out of form Owen to the crease, much to his own chagrin. His frown soon turned upside down though as he hit 17 before being bowled by a well placed yorker. With Saurabh getting a quick 4 and out it was down to Russ and Kenny to see Wick home for a historic win. With Kenny ‘the Janitor’ Thomas attempting to sweep everything at one end, Russ kept the score ticking over and eventually brought the victory home for Wick with the last ball of the 18th over.

A fantastic win for Wick but with our next game against Wayne’s Bridgend side, he might not have to wait long for revenge!

Indeed, 4 days later it was Wayne’s turn to visit Wick with his Bridgend side in tow, with a few changes from the team we’d faced on Wednesday Wick knew they’d pose a formidable challenge.

Wick were bowling first and captain Steve decided to give Owen the gloves despite the fact that we had Jason (Wales over 50s ODI Wicket Keeper) and Harry (Vale cc 2nd XI Wicket Keeper) playing. Some said it was a brave piece of captaincy, others (Owen included) thought it a bit foolish, but he’s paid enough for all his gear so he may as well use it.
Wick were boasting a heavily stacked bowling attack with some serious operators knocking around. Steve elected to open with Tubsy and ‘Hollywood’ Simon Stratten, both bowling some good overs and keeping things tight for Bridgend. Tubsy who was making his first appearance for Wick this year wasted no time in getting back in the swing of things, going for just 23 off his 8 overs which included a wicket and two maiden overs. It was difficult to tell if loving brother Gutsy was red with anger and jealousy or if he’d just caught the sun again.
Gutsy not to be outdone eventually picked up a couple of big wickets in his second spell, dismissing Gwil and the other set Bridgend batter for 62 and 51 respectively. Dr. Tom picked up a wicket and Harry picked up two as, despite some solid bowling from Saurabh, John, Steve and Amal Bridgend racked up a formidable 248 from their 40 overs.

After some negotiations on the batting order, with Owen successfully demoting himself from 3 to 5, Steve who has been in great form with the bat so far this year opened alongside Harry. Sadly, it wasn’t to be Steve’s day as he was dismissed for a very rare duck. Amal joined Harry at the crease with the two quickly building a decent partnership of over 70 before Amal too was dismissed.

Next in was Tom and that was pretty much it. Tom and Harry put on a wonderful display of ‘proper’ cricket, Chipping away at the Bridgend total before finally hitting the winning runs with the best part of 7 overs to spare. Tom getting his half century and Harry hitting a fantastic 156 which included 12 6s and 11 4s.
A fantastic week of cricket topped off with a few cold pints and a few delicious sandwiches courtesy of the The Star Inn, Wick .

We’ve been a little… remiss with our match reports lately. 😬

And by “a little remiss”, we mean we’ve played quite a lot of cricket, celebrated wins, suffered losses, taken wickets, dropped catches, scored runs, argued about whether it was definitely going down leg… and then completely failed to tell you lovely lot about any of it. 🤦‍♀️😂

BUT fear not! Our highly efficient and definitely-on-top-of-everything media department (👀) has finally got its act together.

So, over the next few days, prepare yourselves for The Great Wick CC Match Report Catch-Up. 📰🏏

There will be runs.

There will be questionable statistics.
There will almost certainly be some unnecessary commentary at somebody’s expense.

Birthday Celebrations!

With the wonders of the ground team the strip was looking good for the game after a week of Monsoons and a record 738mm of rain (According to Gutsy).

Pre match talk was of the skipper’s birthday bash, a sensible family orientated event (he has reached the ripe old age of Hawaii {50}) and how late everyone got to bed the previous evening. Most, sensibly turned in at a reasonable time, others slightly later, with Ben setting what he thought was unbeatable at 2.30am, after being Out OUT, only for Iwan to top it with a 6am turn in. Little Sam declined to comment but it is believed he was on social media to his many female acquaintances until the sunrise.

It was at this point that several older members of the squad realised they were probably getting up just before Iwan got in. This included Owz, who blamed parental duties but were not so sure.

To the game, a birthday treat for Russ in winning the toss and we were bowling first.
Gutsy and Saurabh starting up, great first over from Gutsy. Saurabh bowling the second and striking immediately, a catch by Andy from a lofted drive. He then struck again soon after, bowling the number three. A good start. After 10 overs (5 each) Gutsy and Saurabh were replaced by Kenny and Ben. Kenny bowling his classic bamboozlers from the off. A hard drive to cover, not quite taken by Ben (i.e. dropped) almost adding to the list of injuries acquired this season so far. Kenny did strike next with an LBW, then a bowled to claim his customary two wickets. Ben joining in with a wicket (Bowled off the batsman’s legs). With bowling proving too painful, Russell birthday boy (AKA Senior) brought himself onto replace Ben, who wandered off to gain some comfort and reassurance from his best friend Owz behind the stumps. He got lots of something but not sure it was comfort & support. Anyway Russ also claimed a wicket to leave Penarth 49-6.
To be fair to Penarth they then settled down and began to build a total with two solid batsmen at the crease. Little Sam came on for a couple of overs with no further break throughs. At drinks Penarth were 91-6.

Andy and John on after drinks, doing a decent job of keeping the runs in check supported by some good fielding by all. With one of the batsmen reaching his fifty and retiring (to return later if required), the new batsman was treated to some short stuff from John before bowling him with a full yorker length delivery – classic fast bowler strategy. Gutsy giving admiring nods from mid off.

Steve on to replace Andy (Experience replaced by more experience) and he struck straight away bowling the number 10 before the other main batsman got to his 50 and also retired. This brought the first batsman back in but he was soon returning after being trapped LBW by Steve. With the other retired batsman decided he didn’t want to return the innings was up with Penarth ending on 171 after 37 overs.

Debate around the batting line up but settling on a solid start with all rounder Gutsy getting a nose bleed at 4. Debate and arguing around who would be number 11 as several wanted the slot.

Steve and Iwan walking out 1 & 2. Two runs for Steve in first over then unfortunately Iwan receiving a good ball and being out in the second. There is a lesson to be learnt here for all the youngsters tuned in, get to bed early (or at least get a Taxi home rather than walking for 2hrs). The wicket brought birthday boy to the crease, forecast by Gutsy Nostradamus to match his age at least.

Now these two have batted together on many occasions and you could see the understanding straight away, good quick singles, picking gaps, solid defensive work and both punishing bad balls. They past 50 with ease and got us to drinks at 90-1. Level pe***ng with Penarth at the same stage of their innings.

They continued in the same vein after drinks with Russ getting to his age first, soon followed by Steve. They decided to continue rather than retire, in the hope that Steve could outdo his best score for us. The team dug out had now lost interest in the game and were placing bets on how many goals Germany would score against Curacao in the World Cup. Kenny now talking in fluent Portuguese as per his beloved Brazil.

After a partnership of 131, Steve was bowled for a very solid 55 (not quite his age but close enough). Gutsy, who was suffering from a very bad case of pad rash, in next, foaming at the mouth to get at em. He started well and hit some lovely cover drives to the boundary before succumbing to a running mix up and getting run out for a solid 19.

Big Ben, encouraging words from Owz ringing in his ears, was in next. With not many required and Russ starting to succumb to the excesses of the day before, Ben looked to get on with it and was unfortunate to find an awake fielder who took a good low down catch.

Owz in for the coup de grace, dispatching his fifth ball to the boundary to win the game with 4 and a bit overs left. He could be heard saying “Easy game this cricket lark” before helping to carry Russ off on the stretcher.
Steve 55, Iwan 0, Russ 73*, Gutsy 19, Ben 2, Owen 6*.

Good win, with good performances by everyone on the team, but probably have to give man of the match to the birthday boy.
Nah changed my mind – Saurabh for his bowling and fielding.

As always we were well looked after by Emily and the team at The Star Inn, Wick , with plates of sandwiches and roast potatoes. Gutsy even managed to arrive late to the pub but still eat the most.

Post match discussion included:
• Can we use our free pensioner bus passes to go on tour next year now Russ has passed retirement age?
• Should we nearly be considered a half decent cricket team now?
• Is John the secret owner of John Deere tractors?
• World Cup winners - Predictions ranged from England (Gutsy!) to Uzbekistan (Kenny – he got them in the sweep) with many guesses in the middle but John has convinced everyone that it will be a France Portugal final.

🏏 Wick CC vs Colwinston CC 🏏
📅 Sunday 7 June 📅

With 99% of all cricket matches called off due to the torrential rainfall on Saturday it was with much surprise that we rocked up to the village green on Sunday with a decent prospect of a game.

With more weather apps consulted than NASA, we expected that rain was coming around 5.03pm (According to Gutsy) so shortened the match to 30 overs a side (After much negotiation).

The selection session held by Russ in the week was a very tough affair with several players falling short of his demanding requirements – including (much to everyone’s shock) the toughest man in village cricket Owen. That last sprint up the sand dunes of Merthyr Mawr doing nothing for him.

A debutant starting for us this week as well – welcome Iwan. A few of the older heads looked at Iwan and thought he could be a handy player (exact opposite of them i.e. young & athletic). When they overheard him and Tom discussing matches they had played against each other then they realised he must be good.

With Colwinston still arriving it was decided that Wick would bowl first. With no Owz, Ellis (who had somehow managed to survive selection boot camp – rumours that money changed hands are unproven) was asked to don the wicket keeping gear (for first time in about 3 years).

Gutsy and Tom opening the bowling. Gutsy decent first over, ball swinging in nicely. Tom then claiming 2 wickets in his first over (both bowled) to leave everyone a little stunned and nervous about how long game was going to last. Gutsy joined the party claiming 2 wickets (1 bowled & 1 caught by Saurabh) of his own before both did the honourable thing and took themselves off. With bowlers agreeing to bowl a max of 3 overs each, The combination of Young Sam & John next, both bowling well but the resolute Colwinston batsmen settling down to build a total. John did get a wicket in his last over, removing a Vale CC colleague with a catch by Andy.

Simon & Saurabh on next to bowl, Simon fresh back from the NY Knicks basketball game (ringside seats sitting next to Adam Sandler!). His usual tactic of wide, wide wicket failing for the first time in many years. Andy did a great impersonation of Owz at one stage, batsman going down the pitch, missing the ball , Andy actually catching it, batsman not trying to get back into his crease. Andy just looking at the ball in his hands, shocked and forgetting to try and run the batsman out. They do say you should try and emulate your heroes!

Spin twins of debutant Iwan and skipper Russ next, confusing the batsmen with a mix of leg & off spin with the odd top spinner thrown in. Ellis behind the stumps totally at ease reading the ball out of the hand and dealing with the variable bounce (Not!). Iwan did get the break through (and his first wicket for Wick) with a catch by Tom. After bowling Iwan came into slip and had a chat with Andy, Andy “ nice bowling, do you bowl on a Saturday normally” Iwan “No I’m a wicket keeper”, Andy “!*! Russ, why I am I keeping”.

Big Ben and Steve on next a mixture of spin and wibbly wobblies – Steve striking in his last over, another catch by Saurabh. Tom then back on for his third and last over to round the innings off. He struck again with his very last ball. Bowled.

A good fight back by Colwinston, after a quick start by Wick, got them to 157-8 in their 30 overs, with a solid 48 by Robin Jones.

Wick bowling – Gutsy 3 overs 0 maidens 9 runs for 2 wickets (3-0-9-2), Tom 3-1-9-3, Sam 3-0-18-0, John 3-0-18-1, Simon 3-0-16-0, Saurabh 3-1-8-0, Iwan 3-0-12-1, Russ 3-0-19-0, Ben 3-0-18-0 & Steve 3-0-20-1. Apparently no byes were conceded by Ellis :)

Innings break brought more checks of the weather apps, Gutsy now updating his forecast to rain at 5.09pm, so Russ opted for a full on blitz attack to ensure we finished the game prior to the Gutsy guaranteed rain arriving.
So Steve and Iwan strode out first (another new opening partnership). Both looked good – different styles but achieving same thing – one athletic and young and the other Steve.
They passed the 50 run partnership with both getting a six in the process. They had progressed to 67 before Iwan fell to good ball, bowled. Out for 29 off 22 balls on his batting debut. Big Ben strolling out next, to keep the youth and experience partnership going. Steve still accumulating nicely.

Ben took a few balls to settle in before starting to pick the run rate up. They took the total past the 100 mark before Steve fell for a decent 37 off 57 balls.

Russ joined Big Ben and nudged a few singles, allowing Ben to go into overdrive and hitting balls to all parts of the ground, including 2 big sixes.

We crossed the finish line with a few overs left and no further wickets falling.

For those of you who are curious, Nostradamus Gutsy predicted rain at 5:09pm and it started at 5:11pm. Close but no cigar!

Wick CC take on Penarth CC tomorrow (Sunday 14 June) at the Wick Village Green, with the first ball at 13:30.

Our captain has just turned 50, so we're expecting one of two things: either a majestic half-century... or 50 excuses for why he got out. 🎂😂
