As parents, we'd love to be able to simply give our children confidence.
But after more than 50 years of teaching martial arts, I've learned that real confidence doesn't work that way.
Children build confidence by discovering what they are capable of.
I see it every week at Atomic Black Belt Academy in Coventry.
A child struggles with a new technique.
They try.
It doesn't quite work.
They try again.
Then suddenly...
They do it.
It might only be a small achievement, but something important has just happened.
That child has proved to themselves:
"I couldn't do this before, but now I can."
And that's where confidence starts.
One small victory becomes another.
Then another.
Eventually, "I can't do it" starts becoming...
"I'll give it a try."
That's the confidence we want our children to take with them when they return to school.
The confidence to put their hand up.
To speak to someone new.
To tackle something difficult.
To make a mistake and try again.
At Atomic Black Belt Academy, children's martial arts is the vehicle, but developing confident, focused and resilient young people is the bigger goal.
So here's a little question you could ask your child today:
"What's something you can do now that you couldn't do a year ago?"
You might be surprised by their answer. โค๏ธ

The uniform is ready.
The new shoes are bought.
The school bag is packed.
But there is one thing we can't simply buy for our children before they return to school...
Confidence.
A new school year can mean new teachers, new classrooms, new friendships and new challenges.
For some children that's exciting.
For others, it can feel a little overwhelming.
After more than 50 years in martial arts, I've learned that genuine confidence isn't something we can simply give a child.
"It's built through hundreds of small victories."
Learning something they couldn't do yesterday.
Finding the courage to try again when something is difficult.
Speaking to someone new.
Making a new friend.
Discovering that making a mistake doesn't mean they've failed.
These may seem like small moments to us as adults, but to a child they can become the building blocks of genuine self-belief.
That's one of the reasons we teach much more than kicks and punches at Atomic Black Belt Academy in Coventry.
Through children's martial arts, we help our students develop confidence, focus, discipline, respect and resilience, skills we want them to carry from the training mats into the classroom, home and everyday life.
With the new school year almost here, I've written a new article for our Atomic Parent Resource Centre.

Summer may be nearly over, but Operation Summer Warrior isnโt finished yet! ๐๏ธ
Over the holidays, our Atomic students have been taking their Black Belt mindset beyond the academy and staying active, trying new things, spending time with their families and continuing to build great habits.
Now we're entering the final stretch.

Complete your challenges by the end of August.
Perhaps there are only one or two missions left.
Perhaps that Mission Card has been sitting on the fridge waiting for the next adventure.
Or perhaps you haven't started yet.
It doesn't matter where you are. What matters is deciding to finish. ๐ช
That's one of the most important lessons we teach through martial arts at the Atomic Black Belt Academy in Coventry.
A Black Belt mindset isn't about everything being easy.
It's about setting a goal, staying focused and having the perseverance to see it through.
So parents, give your young Summer Warrior a little encouragement this week.
๐ฅ Choose the next challenge.
๐ธ Capture the moment.
๐ฏ Complete your six missions.
๐
And finish Operation Summer Warrior 2026, knowing you achieved the goal you set yourself.
Every completed challenge represents something bigger than the activity itself, it's developing, confidence, discipline, resilience, focus and the belief that โI CAN do this.โ
And that's what martial arts is really about.
The summer isn't over yet.
The mission isn't over yet.
You've still got time.

Today is a big day for thousands of young people across Coventry and beyond.
After years of lessons, revision, exams, early mornings, late nights and probably a few nerves along the way, GCSE Results Day has arrived.
From everyone at the Atomic Black Belt Academy Coventry, we hope you get the results you've worked so hard for. โค๏ธ
But whatever is written on that piece of paper today, remember this:
Your results are part of your journey. They don't define your potential.
One of the lessons we teach through martial arts is that success isn't always about everything going exactly to plan. It's about how we respond, what we learn and what we do next.
So celebrate what you've achieved, be proud of the effort you've made and look forward to the next chapter.
And to all the parents, families and teachers who've supported these young people along the way, today is your day to feel proud too.
๐ฅ Dream It. Believe It. Achieve It.
From Master Mark and everyone at the Atomic Black Belt Academy, good luck to every student receiving their GCSE results today. ๐๐

As children across Coventry prepare to return to school, many parents will be thinking about more than new uniforms, packed lunches and school shoes.
They may also be wondering:
Will my child feel confident walking into their classroom?
Will they make friends, listen to their teacher and cope when something feels difficult?
Thatโs where our Little Ninjas programme can make a real difference.
More than two decades ago, Atomic Black Belt Academy became one of the early martial arts academies in the UK, and one of the first in Coventry, to introduce a specialist age-related martial arts programme for younger children.
We recognised that children aged 4โ7 shouldnโt simply be placed into classes designed for older students.
They need patient instruction, achievable challenges and plenty of encouragement, all delivered in a way that matches their stage of development.
Through Little Ninjas, children learn how to listen, concentrate and follow instructions. They become more coordinated, more disciplined and more willing to keep trying when they donโt get something right the first time.
Most importantly, they begin to believe in themselves.
These lessons donโt stay inside the academy. Parents often notice the difference at home, in the classroom, on the playground and in the way their child approaches new experiences.
For over 25 years, Coventry families have trusted Atomic Black Belt Academy to help children grow into confident and capable young people.
Because sometimes the biggest victory isnโt earning a new belt.
Itโs walking through the school gates with your head held high and thinking:
โI can do this.โ
Our Little Ninjas martial arts programme is designed especially for children aged 4โ7, and beginners are always welcome.
If youโd like to help your child begin the new school year with greater confidence, focus and resilience, comment **LITTLE NINJAS** below or send us a private message.
Weโll be happy to answer your questions and help you take the first step.
