And that’s a wrap on Connah’s Quay & District Angling Club’s four-week Start Early, Fish for Life kids events! 👏🎣

Today was our final session and, despite the rain 🌧️, the youngsters still turned up ready to fish, have fun and learn some new skills.

Over the past four weeks we’ve welcomed lots of local youngsters to the Rosie, with all equipment provided by the club.

As a club, we’re proud to support our local community and give young people the opportunity to experience angling, enjoy the outdoors and hopefully develop a passion for fishing. 🎣🐟

A huge thank you to our fantastic volunteers and bailiff team for giving up their time to make these events possible, and a special shout-out to Deeside Tackle for providing the bait. 👏🎣

Four weeks, plenty of smiles, plenty of fish and hopefully a few anglers for life! ❤️

Today saw the second Start Early Fish for Life event of 2026 held at the Rosie.

The event saw all participants actively engaged and everyone successfully catching fish again.

A big thanks to Deeside tackle who support our events every year with bait it’s much appreciated.

Again a big thanks to our voluntary Bailiff and Committee team for their valuable support and dedication to this event, which benefits the youth within our community each year, without them we couldn’t put these events on.

Some advice for our anglers.

When holding a fish, it's crucial to keep it low to the ground, ideally over or near the water, and NEVER stand up with it. Dropping a fish from a height, especially onto a hard surface, can be fatal. If you need to stand for a photo, do so over the water to minimise the risk of injury if the fish is dropped or wriggles free

• Minimise time out of water:
Keep the fish submerged as much as possible and have all your tools (like unhooking mats and slings) ready to minimise its time out of the water.

• Support its weight:
When holding a fish, always support its body with your other hand, especially for larger fish, to avoid strain on its internal organs and spine.

• Avoid dry surfaces:
Never place the fish on dry towels, paths, or other hard surfaces, as this can remove its protective slime layer and make it susceptible to infection.

• Use wet hands and mats:
Always wet your hands and unhooking mats before handling the fish to avoid removing its protective slime layer.

• Be prepared:
Have your tools ready and be calm to avoid panicking the fish.

• Return fish gently:
When releasing the fish, gently place it back into the water, and hold it upright until it swims away strongly.

• Avoid throwing or dropping:
Never throw or drop a fish back into the water, as this can cause injury.

If you are struggling in any way please ask fellow anglers to assist.

Connah’s Quay and District Angling Club: Committee Statement Regarding Parking at Wepre Park

Dear Members,

As the committee of Connah’s Quay and District Angling Club, we want to provide a clear and honest update regarding the ongoing efforts to secure a suitable parking solution at Wepre Park for our members.

Over the last few years, a significant amount of work has gone into trying to resolve this issue. Many hundreds of hours have been spent by committee members attending meetings, holding discussions, following up with the relevant parties, and continuing to press for a practical outcome that supports the needs of the club and its members.

More recently, we held meetings with FCC and senior executive management. Through those discussions and negotiations with FCC, an area was agreed that we believed would provide the parking solution we have been working so hard to secure.

At that point, we genuinely felt that this was the win we had been fighting for on behalf of our members. Unfortunately, we have now been handed another curveball. FCC has informed us that planning permission will now be required before this can move forward.

This means the outcome is, at this stage, uncertain. Realistically, we believe the chances are currently around 50/50, depending on whether any further restrictions, objections, or additional hurdles are placed in front of us during the planning process.

We want to be completely transparent with members: this is frustrating. The committee has acted in good faith throughout, engaged repeatedly with FCC, and worked hard to reach a sensible agreement.

To have another requirement placed in the way at this stage is disappointing, particularly after the progress that had appeared to have been made.

At present, the current parking charges at Wepre Park apply seven days a week, including Bank Holidays, from 9am to 9pm: up to 2 hours is £1, up to 4 hours is £2, and a full day is £4. Payment can be made by cash, debit or credit card, or through the PayByPhone app.

Flintshire residents can also apply for a 12-month parking permit costing £50, which is equivalent to approximately 96 pence per week. To request an application form, members should email [email protected] or visit a Flintshire Connects Centre.

Applicants will need to provide a copy of the vehicle’s V5 document and a utility bill as proof of Flintshire residency.

That said, we will continue to push this forward, continue to engage with FCC, and do everything we reasonably can to secure the best possible outcome for the club and its members.

We will keep members updated as soon as there is any meaningful progress.
