Cheshire Amateur Cup 1st Round Congleton Reserves 2 - Helsby FC 1

Congleton Reserves took on Helsby FC from the West Cheshire League (2 levels up) in their County Cup

Helsby started the 1st half with most of the possession. On 3 minutes a great tackle from MacCabe forced a corner with Ziglam catching a number of chances.

The 1st Congleton chance came on 13 minutes when Owen had a shot cleared and Harding's shot went over the bar.

Congleton took the lead on 18 minutes when Barnes had a shot blocked which then fell to Clulow. He blasted a shot into the top corner of the net giving the keeper no chance.

The goal gave Congleton more impetus and they had chances on 23 minutes when a ball in the box nearly finds Clulow and a minute later a Davenport ball almost reaches Owen

On 27 minutes Helsby (9) curled a shot just wide and on 30 minutes a Helsby free kick was met with a superb goal line clearance.

On 37 minutes a great run on the left wing from Fenby beat several defenders and his shot was tipped round the post for a corner. Bears later appealed for a penalty but nothing was given.

Helsby put pressure on the Bears at the end of the half with Clews blocking and clearing shots and Travis catching the high ball. Owen played a ball to Harding but he couldn't get a shot away.

The 2nd half started with chances for both teams, Harding having a shot caught and Travis diving down on 57 minutes to smother a shot

Longley replaced Owen on 59 and Helsby appealed for a penalty on 61.

On 64 minutes a Clews clearance hit a Helsby player going out but a corner was given, the resulting shot going into the side netting.

Great work from Congleton continued with Harding having a shot held and a tackle by Michael to stop another Helsby attack.

Congleton doubled their lead when a long clearance from Ziglam brought the Helsby keeper out of his net. The long ball found Clulow who lobbed the keeper for his 2nd goal of the match.

Congleton made further subs with Gledhill and Amri coming on

Helsby got a goal back on 80 minutes with a powerful shot giving Ziglam no chance.

Helsby pressed forward trying to get an equaliser to take the match to penalties with most shots going wide.

A late sub was Southward for Congleton after which we had a chance for Longley.

Helsby continued to push forward with a number of corners and shots but Congleton defended well to get a well earned place in the 2nd round

The draw has now taken place and we will play Stockport Georgians Reserves from the Manchester League Premier Division (2 levels up from our Reserves) at Home on Saturday 10th October 2pm kick off.
