β³οΈ Behind the Scenes at Old Colwyn: It takes a village! π³
When you look out over the course, the first thing you probably notice is a freshly cut green. But keeping our beautiful club running at its best involves so much more than just firing up the mowers!
π₯Ύ Looking After Our Local Environment
Did you know that our responsibilities extend beyond the fairways? Our greenkeeping team also works hard to maintain the local public rights of way that cross our land, ensuring the wider community can safely enjoy the beautiful surroundings we are so lucky to have here in Old Colwyn.
βοΈ The Science of Summer Greens: Shallow Aeration
You might have also noticed us performing "shallow aeration" on the greens recently. Believe it or not, summer actually places the greatest amount of stress on our putting greens. Here is why this process is so vital right now:
High soil temperatures bake the ground.
Increased plant respiration means the grass has a much higher oxygen demand.
More frequent irrigation is required to keep the turf alive.
Greater disease pressure thrives in the summer heat and moisture.
Heavy golfer traffic severely compacts the soil during our busiest months.
Shallow aeration is the perfect solution. It opens up the surface to let the turf breathe and cope with all these summer stresses, crucially avoiding the significant recovery time that major renovation work requires!
π Our Unsung Heroes: The Volunteers
Finally, we have to talk about the absolute heartbeat of Old Colwyn Golf Club, our incredible volunteers.
The course and clubhouse simply wouldn't function without the amazing members who dedicate their free time to water the greens in the evenings, collect rubbish out on the course, and help out behind the bar.
We also want to send a massive thank you to our hardworking committee members who tirelessly organize the competitions, matches, and events. Your dedication is what makes this club and course such a fantastic place to be a part of.
Next time you see a volunteer or a member of the greenkeeping team, be sure to give them a wave and a thank you! ππ

ποΈ We are in the News! Old Colwyn Golf Club featured in North Wales Live! ππ§
We are absolutely thrilled to share that our incredible new eco-friendly initiative has just been featured by North Wales Live!
It is fantastic to see the clubβs hard work and commitment to sustainability being recognised across the region.
As many of you know, we recently welcomed the Mayor of Old Colwyn, Cllr Greg Wynne, to officially open our brand-new ClearWater Water & Waste Recycling System, and the local press has taken notice! πΈβ³οΈ
Just a quick reminder of why this project, made possible thanks to grant funding from Sports Wales and the support of Golf Wales, is such a game-changer for us and the local environment:
β»οΈ 100% Recycling: We naturally treat and reuse all of the wastewater from cleaning our maintenance equipment.
π§οΈ Rainwater Harvesting: We are capturing 48,000 litres of rainwater a year to use on our greens.
π° Massive Savings: We are saving an astounding 112,500 litres of mains water from being drawn from the national grid annually!
We couldn't be prouder of our club, our hardworking greenkeeping team, and our members for supporting this greener future. π³π
