The Barns at Barton Court

One thing I really miss about having the cafe at Barton Court was the fact that we could welcome wheelchair users here.

The wide doorways and gentle ramps made it relatively easy for inclusivity and we had many regular customers who were able to enjoy a trip out with friends and family without any fuss.

I have been researching what other cafes and tea rooms locally are wheelchair friendly and, as soon as I have complied my list, I will post the results here. Please feel free to message me with any suggestions. I know how difficult it is is for some people to get out.

Anyway, while I was doing my research and bemoaning the fact that my bad back prevents more from walking very far, I started to put together some ideas for exploring the hills even if your legs aren't what they used to be.

As you know, I am a terrible hoarder of all things vintage and antique. But I have reached the point where I am going to part with things that we have boxed up in cupboards.

Lots of lovely vintage china - my Midwinter red spotty collection will be on sale - and a stash of fabric antique, vintage and modern will be on sale in the Dutch Barn.

The cafe will be open for refreshments, cake and a light lunch.

Put the date in your diary. 31st October from 10am until 2pm.

We are taking bookings for Christmas parties in the barns, up until to 19 December.

Company dinners, or a group of friends who have decided this year they will do it properly. Both work, and both get the whole place to themselves.

People ask how a party actually works across our two barns.

The flow we suggest is this: arrivals and drinks in the Saw Mill, dinner in the Dutch Barn, then back into the Saw Mill afterwards for drinks and more conversation while the other room is turned round for dancing.

A fun half day of indoor gardening, touring the house, conversation and food. Join Tina and me on 4th November.

PLANTING THE HOUSE AT BARTON COURT

Wednesday 4 November
10am–2pm
£65 per person
Only 16 places

Come and spend a November morning at Barton Court planting Paperwhite narcissi for indoor flowering.

Tina will guide us through planting the bulbs, and each guest will make up a glazed planter to take home and enjoy as the flowers come on.

We’ll also look at different ways of planting bulbs for the house, using interesting bowls and containers rather than always reaching for a conventional flower pot. I’ll be bringing out my old Spode soup tureen too, which has had a rather eventful life and now makes a very good home for bulbs. The photo shows how a Blue Denmark serving bowl that lost its lid has been remagined

There will be coffee and cake on arrival, a tour of the house, a light lunch, and tea before you head home.

This is a small event in the Manor House, with just 16 places.

Tickets are £65 per person and include all materials, your glazed planter and bulbs, refreshments and a light lunch.

Not a glamorous checklist, but these things matter in December when you are planning a party

1. Is it warm? Our barns have underfloor heating throughout, so coats can come off.

2. Can we park? Yes, we have around fifty parking spaces, on site, free and a couple of EV chargers as well

3. Can we stay late? We have a licence until midnight.

Back to the story of my mother-in-law's soup tureen. The one she planted with fragrant narcissi every Christmas as a gift for me. Antique Spode tureen, damaged but still beautiful. I dutifully handed it back in the New Year, knowing that I would see it again. When she died, she left it to me.

Anyway, the story seems to have resonated with a lot of you so I am proposing that, on Wednesday 4 November, we spend the morning at Barton Court planting paperwhites for Christmas.

Tiina - our beloved gardener - will demonstrate how to plant them successfully in containers and we'll each pot up our own to take home. I have chosen a lovely white ceramic pot for us all to plant that you will be able to use again when the flowers have died.

We'll start with a coffee and a bit of cake. Then, after working together, you can have a look around the house while we set the table for a light lunch. If the eather is fine, you are very welcome to explore the garden.

It will be a small group - just 16 places - and the day will run from 10am–2pm.

£65 per person, including your bulbs, the pretty glazed planter, all materials, refreshments and lunch.

I'll get the old soup tureen out to show you what started this all off.
