What a great workout with this fantastic client! šŸ’ŖšŸ¼ā¤ļø

She is already so strong - and she continues to get stronger. Watching that progress is such a reminder of why strength training is so important as we age, and how amazing it can make us feel.

So, why does strength training matter more as women get older?

Bone density: Strength training helps support strong, healthy bones as we age.

Muscle mass: We naturally lose muscle as we get older, so lifting weights is one of the best ways to maintain and build strength.

Metabolism: More muscle helps support a healthy metabolism and increases the amount of energy your body uses at rest.

Balance & falls: Building strength, stability and balance can help us stay strong, capable and independent, while reducing our risk of falls and injury.

But it’s not just about the physical benefits. Strength training helps us feel strong, confident and capable in our everyday lives.

It’s never too late to start — and you are never too old to get stronger.

If you want to read more, let me expand a little…

In short, uphill running, puts your body under a different kind of load than running on the flat. You naturally take quicker steps, shorten your stride and shift toward more of a mid-to-forefoot landing.

All of this helps soften the impact forces and encourages a smoother, more controlled landing.

You also spend a little more time on the ground and less time in the air, which gives you a better platform to push off and drive yourself uphill. That extra push means your hips, quads and calves have to work harder, especially through the concentric phase, so they produce more power with each stride.

Because you lean forward slightly on climbs, the knee doesn’t have to deal with as much extension force or patellofemoral pressure. This can reduce breaking forces and ease the load on the joint compared with running on level ground.

Put together these changes make uphill running a unique training tool: It boosts muscular power and control, while reducing some of the mechanical stress that we experience on flat terrain.

Excited to share that I’m also now certified as an Ultrarunning Coach by UESCA (United Endurance Sports Coaching Academy). I chose to study with them as they stand out as a leader in science-based endurance coaching and provide a robust curriculum to support coaches. I know quite a few of our clients have run marathons and are thinking….what next? Well, maybe now is a good time to think longer term and longer distances… Drop me a line when you’re ready to explore šŸ‘Œ
