A weekend in the Peaks with map and compass in hand, guiding a lovely group on another of ’s beginner navigation courses.

Congrats to Jenny and Fiona for bagging their Bronze awards 🥉. Jenny is planning to use her newly honed skills to explore more outdoors, and Fiona is working her way to becoming a group leader. Both did brilliantly.

We were joined by Madeleine on Saturday on our Beginners One Day courses - leaving with a solid set of nav skills to take away and put into practice.

Emma has more courses available to book later in the year - check out https://www.emmahollandmountaintraining.co.uk/ for more info and availability

🥉🔵 Four more NNAS Bronze award holders this weekend, making our way through bluebell filled woodland.

Congrats to Lily, Matt, Jayne and Paul who joined us one of ’s NNAS courses that I led this weekend in the Peaks. Great work all! 🙌

I was particularly pleased to be joined by as a wingwoman this weekend, shadowing on the course and providing some excellent leadership support. Caz and I were on the same Mountain Leader training course with back in 2022, so it was great to come full circle and team up on delivering a nav course together. Thanks Caz!

🥈 Congrats to Katie, and father + son duo Charlie and Andy for having successfully completed their silver award today.

A day of contrasting weather had us once again pulling out the woolly hats as yesterday’s warmth gave way to a morning of murky chill and a cold wind up on the moors. The sun did make a reappearance this afternoon.

Great nav work from all, with Charlie and Andy planning more adventures outdoors (as well as a Gold DofE planned!), and Katie building confidence ahead of her Mountain Leader training. A great group!

Pleasure as always to deliver this day 2 of ’s Silver NNAS course.

🍁 🧭 Autumn navigating

A weekend with Debbie, Andy and Amy plotting a course through classically mixed autumnal weather - one bright brisk clear day, followed by a decidedly chilly and wet one - but with great navigating throughout, leading a beginner navigation course for Emma Holland Mountain Training

Thank you all!

☀️🥉 Building navigation fundamentals

A humid weekend in the Peaks with Adele and Fran () who both completed their NNAS Bronze award, and Chris and Anna who joined for our one-day beginner course, all for

The course was a gift from Chris to Anna (using one of the gift vouchers available on ’s website), and I’m pleased to say it was happily received! Anna started the day with very little navigation knowledge and was masterfully plotting her way round the Longshaw Estate by the end of the day. Well done both!

Adele and Fran joined for another of the Bronze courses that I am running for Emma - and it was pleasure to spend time with them both! They both secured their Bronze award 👏, with plans to progress to Silver soon🥈

Thank you all!

☀️🥉 Bronzing in more ways than one!

A sunny and warm weekend in the Peaks with Lee (), Matt () and Fran () leading a NNAS Bronze navigation award course for Emma Holland Mountain Training

This was my first time leading solo on a National Navigation Award Scheme course for Emma - and I couldn’t have asked for a better group, or better weather! Lee and Matt secured their Bronze award 👏, with Fran joining us for Day 1 with her Day 2 booked in for next month.

All three did brilliantly - and it was great to chat all things outdoors, from careers and Mountain Training awards, to access and environmental issues.

See you all for Silver next time! 🥈

⛰️Focus on all things slope and shape.

This was a 1-to-1 session with Mic, building on his Gold NNAS to build knowledge of everything relating to contours. Mic did splendidly, really getting his eye in on the squiggly lines.

We used contour-only maps (stripping away all other map features, navigating using contours alone), and covered topics including differences in how contours are presented on different maps, how to interpret and use them, visualising height gain, and thinking about what’s happening between the contour lines.

This was a bespoke course for - get in touch if you’d like something similar!

This weekend was a special one, bringing together three very different parts of my life: the outdoors, family and friends, and my professional legal world.

I’ve known Pete since our law school days (let’s not count the years!), and we’ve worked at the same firm ever since. A few months ago, he assured me—somewhat dubiously—that his partner and fellow lawyer Lucia would be *thrilled* to receive the “gift” of a navigation course with me. I took him at his word.

Meanwhile, my mum mentioned that, in an unguarded moment, my dad had suggested he’d quite like to do one of mine and Emma Holland Mountain Training’s courses. That was all the encouragement we needed—his birthday present was sorted!

And so, this weekend, we came together in the Peak District for one of our two-day navigation courses. I swapped my legal tech hat for my *Mountain Leader* one and had the absolute pleasure of guiding Pete, Lucia, and Dad (Stephen) through the skills of navigation.

They all did brilliantly, showing some impressive nav skills—and, most importantly, we’re all still on speaking terms! Thanks, team, for a fantastic couple of days.
