October is Blindness Awareness Month! It also contains World Sight Day on the 8th and White Cane Awareness Day on the 15th. For this month, SSW is focusing on games which are accessible to both blind and sighted players.

In the image above, there is tactile chess and large print playing cards, well known games which have been made accessible. In the image are also 3D printed tactile Noughts and Crosses, and Bingo, which has a tactile print board as well as a braille board.

These will be out during coffee mornings if anyone would like a competition. We're also hosting Sussex Spitfires Showdown Club Showdown Showcase on Sunday 25th October, so do come along to try that out. It's a free event, on all day from 10.30am-3pm.

Check our calendar of events on the website for details of coffee mornings.

Did you know about The Peoples Blueprint. They are looking for people to join the Community Steering Group. How about you?

The People’s Blueprint has been funded for 2026 by The National Lottery Community Fund - the largest community funder in the UK. This truly life-changing funding comes from the first phase of its Community Power Fund – to support underserved communities in England to affect positive change in their local area. To influence the places they live, the services they use, and the decisions that affect them.

Brighton and Hove City Council is supporting this project. To help to engage with communities and are ultimately the policymakers who can put into practice what recommendations communities develop.

This project is supported by The National Lottery Community Fund through its Community Power Fund. The funding supports work with communities in Brighton and Hove to increase their ability to influence the places they live, the services they use and the decisions that affect their lives.

Thank you to Keychange Charity for organising the event today 'Community Connections' - hopefully the first of future events. It was lovely to meet the community around Adur – so Shoreham, Southwick and Fishersgate. The Southwick Community Centre is an amazing resource – a tardis of space.

We saw some familiar faces at Romans Care Home - Keychange Charity Home Instead Brighton, Hove and Shoreham Carers Support West Sussex Good Life Sorted - Worthing Community Transport Sussex Age UK West Sussex, Brighton & Hove and met some new people at Shoreham & Southwick U3A Just Friends Adur Voluntary Action, including taking part in a bunting craft activity. We hope we were able to tell people about our seated activities for their community groups and care settings. Get in touch if you'd like to find out more too.
