As seems to be this year’s tradition, Captain Cowps lost the toss once again and his team were asked to bowl first.
Cartmel got off to a great start, with Joe A (AKA Naggers) opening up with a wicket maiden to get things going. Bowling from the other end was Thushan, who also made a great start, bowling a great line and challenging the stumps on what appeared to be a challenging wicket for batsmen to get bat on ball.
Thushan and Naggers bowled exceptionally well with great discipline, and with plenty of backup in the field from their teammates, wickets kept tumbling from either end and the runs had all but dried up. Silverdale found themselves in deep trouble at 17-7, with Thushan on the brink of his maiden five-wicket haul as a Cartmel player. He just needed one more magic ball to secure it, and that he did! Finishing with great figures of 5-17 off 11 overs.
A little resistance came from Keith Forster, top-scoring with a valiant 9 off 44 balls before becoming the last wicket to fall. And you guessed it, another five-wicket haul came from the other end, with Naggers finishing an excellent spell with 5-9 off 11.4 overs, leaving the home side bowled out for 29.
With the tea break delayed until the end of play, the game turned around and not even Cartmel could lose the game from here… But they tried their best! 🫣
Opening up were Chris Tuson and Stuart Bailey, and it wasn’t long before the first Cartmel wicket had fallen, with Bailey the victim. A quick succession of wickets fell for Cartmel thanks to some tight bowling and some questionable shot selection from our batsmen, leaving Cartmel at 10-5 and Silverdale in the driving seat.
For a few overs, they looked on top, but that brought Naggers to the crease, top-scoring with 10 and building a nice partnership with opener Tuson, who was still there holding it all together. But before long, Naggers departed after trying to hit a straight ball into Holgates swimming pool.
With only 6 required to win, the Captain came to the crease and, in true Cowperthwaite fashion, it didn’t take him long. Hitting two fours in three balls, he took his side to victory, with Tuson remaining not out at the other end with a gutsy 3 not out.
It wasn’t a long game, but it was certainly action-packed, to say the least!
