Top Tips
Are you properly prepared
for cold water paddling?

As we head into 2026 huddled under umbrellas and avoiding the puddles and potholes, we can start to dream about the sunshine and summer paddling to come. Cold weather and cold water doesn't mean you have to stop paddling for the year, it just means you need to be properly prepared for the conditions.
Winter SUP paddling requires some careful thought and preparation, and that starts with thinking about what to wear. Here's a few things to consider to keep you warm and safe on the water:
Essential Winter Gear
Drysuit or Winter Wetsuit: A 5mm+ wetsuit is recommended for 4-8°C water, but a drysuit is generally considered better for colder conditions, as it keeps you dry and allows for layering underneath.
Neoprene Accessories: Neoprene boots (essential for warmth/grip), gloves, and a hood/beanie are necessary to retain body heat.
Safety Equipment: A 50N+ buoyancy aid or PFD is vital to stay afloat if you fall, offering essential time to recover in cold water.
Leash: Always use a leash to stay connected to your board.
Changing Gear: A changing robe is highly recommended to warm up immediately after exiting the water.
Safety & Planning
Check Conditions: Avoid windy, stormy, or high-flow water conditions.
Dress for the Water: Dress for the water temperature, not the air temperature.
Stick Close to Shore: Don't venture too far out, staying close to shore is safest.
Inform Others: Always tell someone where you are going and when you will return.
Dry Bag: Carry a phone in a waterproof case to call for help if needed.
Winter Techniques
Layering: Wear base layers under your drysuit or neoprene for maximum warmth.
Prepare for Immersion: Practice getting back on your board with your winter gear on.
Mindful Paddling: Start slowly, keep sessions shorter, and avoid pushing limits.
Visibility: Use bright clothing or gear, as daylight hours are limited.
