Six years ago! Me competing on Vanilla whilst she was infoal with Overflow Fearless!

So, out of the 11 mares we have covered this season, most of which have had 3-4 attempts each, we FINALLY have our second mare in foal! And, rather ironically, it is our oldest mare, Orchid’s Dixie (Vanilla), who is 21 years old 😂

I wasn’t actually sure whether we were going to cover Vanilla again this year, but she has maintained such good condition whilst having a foal at foot that we decided there was no reason not to give her another chance. This will be her seventh pregnancy, although she has five living offspring, having sadly lost one foal and reabsorbed another pregnancy.

It really is ironic that we have several much younger mares, including two 3yos and a 6yo, that we have had absolutely no luck getting in foal this season, one of which is actually Vanilla’s own daughter… yet, of course, the 21yo gets pregnant 😂

We initially tried Vanilla with frozen semen from Goliath van de Groenweg, but unfortunately she didn’t take. Particularly because of her age, we then decided to try chilled semen from Brando SD, and we are absolutely thrilled that it has worked!

I’ve made several posts about Brando and his lineage already. Although he is competing in dressage himself, there are numerous top jumping ponies on both his damline and sireline. Having also seen a video of Brando jumping, I genuinely think that if he had been given the opportunity to pursue showjumping, he could have been very successful. He has a really nice jump and technique.

We are also so pleased with our 2025 Brando filly, Overflow Britannia, out of Rooks Rhythm. She is a super type with lovely movement, which made us even more excited to use him again.
Vanilla herself is also a very good mover despite being predominantly jumping bred, so we are really looking forward to seeing what this combination produces.

Hopefully, we will get another real allrounder, a foal with scope, a good jumping technique and quality movement, giving it the potential to excel in whichever discipline suits it best.

Fingers crossed now for a straightforward pregnancy and, a healthy foal in 2027 🤞🤞
