Micro-teach day. My favourite!

I spend the first part of our Level 3 Award in Education & Training teaching people “how to teach”, and then I get to sit back and see what they’ve done with it.
They never fail to surprise me.

This week we had learners from care, government departments, therapies, journalism and contingency roles.

Completely different worlds, yet within days they were helping each other, sharing experiences and naturally networking.

Then came their micro-teaches.

I encourage them to choose something close to their heart, think outside the box, stretch themselves and PLEASE don't just read PowerPoint slides at us.

Their feedback to each other included:
Fun, calming, engaging, passionate, inclusive, informative, compassionate and “you made me feel safe”.

I always tell my learners they’ll learn as much from each other on micro-teach day as they do from me. This lot proved my point beautifully.

In a few weeks I'll be very proudly handing them their nationally recognised teaching qualifications, and then I get the joy of watching what they do with them.

Teach their staff, move into training, teach in college, add training to an existing business or even start their own training academy. The possibilities really are huge.

Yesterday was one of my favourite days of every course.

Micro-teach day.

A group of people from completely different backgrounds.

Government, charities, business owners and individual learners. Different professions. One shared goal.

To become qualified to teach.

And what a day they gave us.

We learnt about the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), planning successful events, understanding timing in music, learning languages more effectively, making skull candles and so much more.

I always encourage learners to teach something they know well, whether it's a professional skill, a passion or a hobby. Every single micro-teach is a reminder that expertise comes in so many different forms.

But the biggest lesson isn't on the slides.
It's watching complete strangers become a supportive learning community. Encouraging each other. Celebrating each other's successes.

Watching them grow in confidence with every presentation and sharing the learning with each others was fantastic to be part of.

I'm incredibly proud of every one of them.

Today we celebrate another incredible group of newly qualified trainers. 🎓

Their micro-teach sessions covered topics as diverse as the people delivering them:

✔️ Cognitive Mapping

Every cohort reminds me that there is no such thing as a “typical” learner.

This month our classroom brought together professionals from government departments, the charity sector, education, self-employed business owners and industry leaders. Different careers. Different experiences and shared goal.

To learn how to teach.

Watching complete strangers become a supportive learning community, grow in confidence and deliver such engaging sessions is one of the best parts of my job.

Today they receive their Level 3 Award in Education and Training certificates, but I know this is only the beginning. Some will return to complete their assessor and IQA qualifications.

Others will go on to train colleagues, open their own academies, inspire future learners and create opportunities they hadn’t imagined just a few weeks ago.

Congratulations to every one of you. It has been a privilege to be part of your journey, and I can’t wait to see where teaching takes you next.
