🏊♀️ Competition Pool Update 🤽♀️
Following our successful return to the 50m configuration in January 2026, we have unfortunately encountered a secondary, unforeseen mechanical failure that has forced us back into 25m operation.
We want to be entirely transparent about the technical challenges we are currently navigating. The pool’s submersible boom which allows us to offer the 50m or 25m option is a complex piece of engineering powered by bespoke hydraulic rams and high-pressure hoses.
In early 2025, we identified that the RAMS were nearing the end of their lifespan. We immediately committed nearly £200,000 for bespoke replacements, which had a 3–4 month manufacturing lead time. Unfortunately these works were then conducted in late 2025 but further issues arose.
On Tuesday 10th February, the boom nearest to the ice rink appears to have caught on the side of the pool and we are now unable to move it up or down, our dive team was on site the following day to start an investigation. We have now discovered further damage has occurred and are working closely with contractors on the solution, our dive team and engineers are back on site now working hard. Timelines for completing repairs are still not clear but we will of course keep you updated.
Cardiff International Pool & Gym is a flagship leisure facility in Cardiff and Wales, we are dedicated to its longevity. This current project is part of a much larger commitment to the building’s health; in the last year alone, we have invested £1.2 million into our core infrastructure and we continue to plan work in 2026 and beyond to maintain and improve the centre.
The pool will remain in its 25m configuration while we work towards a solution. We are just as frustrated as you are by this sequence of events, especially after briefly returning to 50m last month.
We appreciate your patience as we work through these complex engineering hurdles to ensure Cardiff International remains your ideal destination for swimming.
