Introduction to Portrait Painting with Oils
with Rida Batool

Never picked up a paintbrush before? Perfect! This course is designed just for you. Over four relaxed weeks, you’ll go step by step from a simple pencil sketch all the way to a finished oil portrait, learning exactly what to do at each stage and why. You’ll learn how to sketch a face, prepare your canvas, build up a painting in layers, and mix realistic colours, all while starting to find a style that feels like your own. There’s a little bit of homework between sessions to keep your painting moving, but nothing overwhelming. By the end, you’ll walk away with a portrait you’re proud of and the confidence to keep painting.
Rida is a multidisciplinary artist, writer and art tutor, with many years experience teaching across a range of ages and abilities. Her artistic practice spans painting, sculpture, photography, installation and creative writing, exploring themes of memory, identity, place and belonging. Through both her practice and teaching, Rida is passionate about making art accessible, encouraging experimentation, confidence and self-expression.

In this 4 week course you’ll learn the basics of embroidery, then design and create your own embroidery piece inspired by the fungal world. All materials provided, and fungal learning sprinkled throughout.
Week One – Learn the basics about fungi, and embroidery, complete a mushroom themed stich sampler and get some inspiration for your own piece.
Week Two – Design your mushroom embroidery piece and start sewing.
Week Three - Continue work on your own mushroom piece with chances to learn some new stitches, as well as some new fungal facts.
Week Four – Complete your mushroom piece with an (optional) mini exhibition at the end for everyone to share their work, and admire what others have done.

Modern Upholstery with Deborah de Lloyd
10am-4pm Sunday 20th September

Modern upholstery is where you use staples, foam, wadding and fabrics to re-energise old furniture using faster methods than traditional upholstery and materials that prioritise comfort and functionality. On this one day course you will learn the basics of modern upholstery by learning how to remove and replace an old dining chair seat, fabric and padding.
Deborah is a creative, with a background in Costume for TV and theatre. She now works in TV where she makes upholstery as well as other items for various dramas such as Dr Who and The Other Bennett Sister.
We will supply everything needed for the workshop, but you are also welcome to bring your own chair and fabric if you have one sitting there just waiting for a project like this!

Our studios are for non-commercial artists (i.e. for experimental art making, making things/experiences that aren't inherently 'sellable' in a day to day context, rather than for artists/designers/makers making work to sell to the public).
