We’ve been enjoying diving into some of the devices from Meyer’s 1570 Art of Combat in our recent classes 📖🤓. Not only have we explored some of the more common guards like Ochs, but we’ve also explored Meyer’s teachings on the less common Einhorn 🦄 and Mittelhut. This week we will be putting our skills to the test in our regular end-of-month sparring session ⚔

At the end of June, team Edel travelled to Marlow to compete at the Albion Cup! It was a tough tournament with remarkable fencing, but Aphra, Sophie and Arren gave it their all and certainly did us proud! (Photo credit: Andy McCormack .hematog)

Aphra completed in URG sabre and longsword, navigating some extremely challenging pools while doing so. She fought tooth and nail in a stacked sabre pool, and scored some brilliant ripostes in the process! She also performed well in longsword, employing some of the devices we have been working on in class to great effect, and finishing 12th in what was a stacked event!

Arren fought the outrageous heat in open longsword B, and facing some stiff competition managed to take several bouts to the final exchange with only points in them! A strong performance with brilliant moments aplenty!

Sophie fought in Open Longsword B, Open Sabre B, and Open Rapier B.
She had a decent start to longsword pools, winning all but one, but took a tough defeat in her first round of eliminations. Sabre was a tough one: with challenging opponents, she managed to win a few fights, but unfortunately did not make the cut for eliminations. Rapier however went well! Sophie swept her pool, and went on to win every fight afterwards, only faltering at the final, but still taking home a silver medal!

Well done fencers!

We had a fantastic time giving a sword demonstration at the Seed & Spark Fire Festival at Craig-y-Nos Castle 🔥

Thank you so much Delphi Nile : Reclaiming the Fire for having us; we feel very privileged to have been able to share our love of swords in such a beautiful setting with such a wonderful audience.

If you liked what you saw and want to learn how to swing a sword yourself, drop us a message to join our next beginner course! 🤺

Remember, tonight's beginner class will be at the slightly later time of 5.30pm to 6.30pm, followed by our regular class from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. We'll be back to our usual timings next week!

Meyer and Fabris and Giganti, oh my! Last week, after our beginner longsword class, one regular class took a break from Meyer. Instead, Sophie taught a rapier class using plays from Giganti and Fabris, including the sassiest move ever, Inquartata. We'll be back to longsword this week but we'll certainly revisit rapier in the future!
