Gym anxiety is normal.
From my experience of the last 3 years coaching on the gym floor iâve noticed that the free weight section is what causes the biggest fears.
I get it, you have the big mirror, no machine to help you keep your form. Just you and the weights. It feels quite vulnerable đ
Your first set is always wobbly, you may struggle to keep your arms in sinc. ( more so if your me đ ) and you may fight with the bench to get it to the right height. But all of this is ok. đ
Weâve all been there worrying whether we look like we know what weâre doing or if we look daft. And if everyone was being honest they would admit that too.
But in all seriousness no one is looking at you judging whether youâre doing it âperfect enoughâ. The person next to you is probably thinking the same thing.
Everyone started in the same place as you⊠as a newbie. You step foot into that gym and practise your routine every session. Each week trying to do better than the last.
I tell all my clients the gym is a hobbie you have to learn and put the time into. Practise, practise practise. Until you go in there, and it feels second nature. Then the only focus you have is making sure you push yourself as hard as possible each session.
I promise you no one is staring at you, thinking anything awful. The gym is one of the very few places that requires everyone in there to have one thing in common, and that is to prioritise making themselves better. Itâs an environment built for growth and love. Not judgement.
So please dont let that voice in your head win. Walk in the doors, go to that free weights section and give it a go.
Wear headphones to keep your focus and distract yourself. Opt for quieter times whilst you build your confidence. Ask a member of staff for help if you need it, thats what weâre there for!
At some point itâll feel like home and youâll be so glad you stuck it out. And trust mem your future self will most definetly appreciate your courage. đ«¶đȘ
