Bugbrooke Cricket Club 3rd XI’s incredible run continued with a dramatic two-wicket victory over Spencer Bruerne CC 3rd XI at Collingtree, with the winning runs coming in the final over.

Spencer Bruerne batted first and posted an imposing 207/2 from their 40 overs. It was a tough afternoon for the Bugbrooke attack, with Tony Malone taking 1-51, but the Trumpets stuck at it knowing they had a sizeable chase ahead.

And what a chase it turned out to be!

After losing some early wickets, Ady Spruels (35) and Joe Musson (44) played two hugely important innings to keep Bugbrooke in the contest. With wickets continuing to fall, though, the game remained firmly in the balance.

Then came a superb innings from an unlikely source! Better known as one of the 3rd XI’s main strike bowlers, Steve Sprules stepped up with the bat when his side needed him most, producing a brilliant unbeaten 51 from just 45 balls, including six fours and two sixes.

The tension continued to build as the chase went right down to the final over. With Spruels still there at one end, captain David 'Spen' Francis stepped up and struck the winning runs, finishing 4 not out from his only delivery as Bugbrooke reached 210/8 from 39.4 overs.

A brilliant chase, a fantastic unbeaten half-century from Steve Spruels and a captain’s finish from Dave Francis! 👏💚💛

The victory earns Bugbrooke another 20 points and keeps the 3rd XI SECOND in Division 12 West, with promotion now all but secured heading into the final weekend of the season.

And what a run has put them in this position. The 3rds have now recorded an incredible THIRTEEN WINS IN A ROW and haven’t lost since 23 May! 🔥🔥

Week after week they’ve found a way to win, and this latest victory might have been the most dramatic yet. From fighting their way into the promotion picture to now standing on the brink of going up, it has been a phenomenal run when it has mattered most.

One more Saturday. One more win. Finish the job, seal promotion and make it FOURTEEN on the bounce

Bugbrooke Cricket Club 2nd XI produced a brilliant fightback to beat Podington Cricket Club 2nd XI by two wickets at Bugbrooke Playing Field on Saturday.

Podington won the toss and elected to bat first, but the Bugbrooke attack kept them under pressure throughout.

Pat Johansen bowled superbly, taking 3-33 from his 10 overs, before Michael Chapman produced a devastating triple-wicket maiden on his way to figures of 3-20 from just five overs. William Howarth then helped finish the job with 3-30, as the three bowlers shared nine wickets between them and Podington were dismissed for 137 in 29.3 overs.

Chasing 138, though, things quickly became far from straightforward for the Trumpets!

While Jonny Goodson stood firm at one end, wickets tumbled around him. Alexander James Franklin ,Daniel Wright, Ben Tompkins and Alasdair Bailey were all dismissed without scoring, leaving Bugbrooke in serious trouble.

Goodson refused to buckle and produced a superb battling innings of 61 from 96 balls, finding the boundary 12 times and providing the backbone of the Bugbrooke chase.

After Goodson’s departure there was still plenty of work to do, but Dan Starmer’s 26 from 34 balls, including three fours and a six, proved another crucial contribution.

Then came Pat Johnson, completing an outstanding all-round performance. Having already taken three wickets with the ball, Johnson held his nerve with an unbeaten 36 from 47 balls, including six fours, to drag Bugbrooke towards the finishing line.

With Will Howarth alongside him at the end, Bugbrooke finally reached 138/8 from 38.1 overs, sealing a dramatic two-wicket victory and collecting the full 20 points.

From a top order containing four ducks to getting over the line with only two wickets remaining, the 2nds certainly didn’t do it the easy way — but this was a fantastic display of character and another excellent team victory.

Bugbrooke Cricket Club 1st XI’s remarkable late-season run continued at the Doc White Ground as the Trumpets made it eight consecutive victories, remaining unbeaten since their last defeat on 18th July. 🎺💚💛

After winning the toss and electing to field, Bugbrooke produced another strong bowling display to dismiss Sharnbrook & Bromham CC 1st XI for 154.

Zed Babar led the attack superbly, returning figures of 4-40 from his 10 overs, while Hassan Ehsan Awan continued his excellent form with 3-39. Captain Afaq Babar also played his part with 2-36, ensuring the visitors were restricted to a very chaseable total.

There were a few nervy moments in the reply, but Reece Barnes produced the key innings for the Trumpets. His excellent 51, featuring seven fours and three sixes, provided the platform for the chase.

Mohsin Ahmed (35) and Jumshaid Farooq (33) also made important contributions to keep Bugbrooke moving towards their target.

With the finishing line in sight, Farhan Azhar(16)* and James Garrard (2)* saw the Trumpets safely home at 158/6 from 28.2 overs, sealing a four-wicket victory and another valuable 20 points.

It extends what has been a fantastic finish to the season for the 1st XI — eight wins in a row and unbeaten since 18th July! 🔥

Sharnbrook picking up five points from the game does mean they head into the final weekend three points ahead of Bugbrooke in the battle for third place.

So it all comes down to one final Saturday…

Bugbrooke travel to Long Buckby, looking to complete an incredible finish to the season with a ninth consecutive victory, while Sharnbrook travel to bottom-of-the-table Cogenhoe.

The Trumpets need to take care of their own business and hope Cogenhoe can do them a favour. The odds might be against us, but after eight straight wins, there’s still just enough room for one final twist in the tale… 👀
