As Summer changes into Autumn, swimming in the sea and other open water can become more challenging and requires extra care. The water temperature begins to drop, daylight hours become shorter, and the weather can be more changeable, bringing stronger winds, waves and currents. To keep ourselves safe, we should always check the weather, tides and water conditions before swimming, choose a familiar and safe location, and avoid swimming alone. Wearing a brightly coloured swimming hat and using a tow float can make us more visible, while a suitable wetsuit can provide extra warmth as the water gets colder. It is also important to enter the water gradually, know our own limits, stay close to the shore or know where your exit points are and have warm, dry clothes ready for afterwards. By planning ahead and respecting the changing conditions, we can continue to enjoy open-water swimming safely throughout the autumn 🌊
