Absolute, lower third, or you genuinely could not care less?

Co-witness height is one of those things people either have firm opinions about or have never thought about once. Absolute puts the irons dead centre. Lower third keeps the glass clear and the irons out of the way until you need them. Plenty of people run neither and have never missed them.

So where do you sit?

Tube sights went quietly out of fashion for a while. The ARO MRS is a decent argument that this was premature.

It is fully enclosed, so the emitter sits behind glass at both ends and nothing gets to it. No rain on the LED, no dust in the housing, no reticle that quietly gives up halfway through a wet morning on a permission. In this country that matters rather more than it does in most places.

The window is 22mm, a step up from the 403 and 503 it replaces, and it is sized to line up properly with Holosun magnifiers if you want 3x behind it later on.

The Multi-Reticle System gives you a 2 MOA dot when you want precision, a 65 MOA circle when you want speed, or the two together. Switch the circle off entirely for a clean sight picture.

Shake Awake, 50,000 hours on a CR2032, IP67, and both mounts in the box: 1.63 inch lower third and a 1.05 inch low.

Nobody sets out to build a heavy rifle. It happens one accessory at a time.

Which is the argument for the HM3X Micro. Same 3x as the standard HM3X, in a housing that comes in at 8.47oz and is a good deal shorter. On a lightweight setup, or anything already carrying a moderator out front, that is rail space and balance handed back to you.

The trade is small and worth being straight about. Eye relief is 67mm against 70mm on the full size version, so it is marginally less forgiving on head position. Field of view is the same 7 degrees, so nothing is lost through the glass.

The rest is family standard. Flip to side QD mount so it swings clear for close work, absolute and lower third spacers in the box, adjustable diopter from plus three to minus three, nitrogen purged and IP67.

Buying the 510C and the HM3X separately works perfectly well. Buying them as a set works out better, and you get a hardcase thrown in rather than sold to you afterwards.

The 510C is the one with the big open window and the Multi-Reticle System. A 2 MOA dot when you want precision, a 65 MOA circle when you want speed, or the two together when you cannot decide. Solar Failsafe keeps the reticle lit off daylight if the battery quits mid-session, and Shake Awake brings it back the moment you lift the rifle.

Flip the HM3X in behind it and you have 3x on tap for the longer targets. Flip it back out and you are running a clean open window again. One setup covering both ends of a session, and no swapping optics between stages.

What would you be putting this on?

Everyone remembers the point they stopped bothering with iron sights.

For some it was a match where the dot just made everything faster. For others it was realising the front post covers half the target at 50 yards. And for a few it was purely that the eyes are not what they were.

So what did it for you? First red dot, what it went on, and whether you ever looked back.

One optic, or one per gun?

Some people buy a sight, mount it, zero it, and it stays on that rifle until one of them wears out. Others have a QD mount and one good optic that migrates between three or four platforms depending on what they fancy doing that weekend.

The swappers will tell you it's economical and the return to zero is fine. The non-swappers will tell you that "fine" is doing a lot of work in that sentence.

Most people who run a magnifier run a 3x. The HM6X is for the ones who've decided that isn't enough.

Six times magnification behind your red dot, on an ambidextrous flip-to-side QD mount. Target's close, it flips out of the way. Target's out there, flip it back in. No swapping optics, no second rifle, no LPVO and all the compromises that come with one.

The practical details are the good bit. 65mm of eye relief, which is generous and means you're not welded to the tube to get a full picture. A ±3 diopter adjustment so you can tune the focus to your own eyesight instead of squinting through someone else's. Windage and elevation adjustment so it lines up properly with the sight in front of it. Removable spacer for absolute or lower 1/3 co-witness. 7075-T6 aluminium, IP67 rated.

Worth knowing: 6x narrows the field of view considerably next to a 3x, so it rewards a deliberate setup rather than fast work up close.

Zero distance. What are you actually running?

Red dot shooters seem to fall into two camps. One group picks a distance, zeroes there, and never touches it again. The other has strong opinions about holdover at 25 yards and will explain them at length given half a chance.

Both are correct, depending entirely on what you're shooting and where.
