Two years ago, a few members from Bristol were fortunate enough to participate in the World Karate Day celebration, joining the demonstration along Kokusa Dori in Okinawa, Japan.

It was a truly wonderful experience and a great honour to be part of a sea of people who share the same passion and love for Karate.

Every now and then, I mention to our class that, on many occasions when we were just starting out, it was only Sandra and my two kids in the class.

Here is a golden video clip as evidence of that dedicated trio. That was **9 years ago!**

Now, I am proud to say that Sandra is my most senior student and our **first black belt**. Last month, Marcus achieved his **Nidan (2nd Dan Black Belt)**, and Andrea achieved her **Shodan (1st Dan Black Belt)**.

They were tested under the watchful eyes of Yosh*taka Taira Sensei, 10th Dan, and Toshimitsu Arakaki Sensei, 10th Dan, at the Hombu Dojo of Matsubayashi Ryu in Okinawa.

Great job, the three of you! 🥋

Today, we celebrate 9 years of Shorin Martial Arts Bristol! 🎉

It was a great night, and I’m really pleased that so many were able to come, even though it’s the holiday season. Those who weren't able to make tonight, we missed you and equally thanks for training and supporting the dojo. I ate some cakes on your behalf 😁.

I never planned to have a big dojo or many students. All I wanted was to practise karate with people who like to learn and love karate and that’s why we are all here today.

Thank you all for your continued support, dedication and friendship.

And today, let’s start the road to our 10-year anniversary! 🥋

This year, we are looking forward to joining this great cause again in celebration of World Karate Day. This will be our 8th time participating in this great event, I believe.

This event was created as a great initiative by our friend, James Pankiewicz Sensei, who lives in Okinawa. There will be a 100 Kata event in Okinawa, which I believe is the only event so far during World Karate Day week, and then many dojos around the world will be participating as well. And Shorin Bristol will not miss it!

Wandering around the Tsuboya Pottery District in Okinawa, I stumbled upon this shop and saw these dragon pottery pieces. It suddenly clicked that these were the works of one of the rock stars of Okinawan pottery on Instagram, Ryukyu Pottery.

When you get a chance, visit him, follow his Instagram, and check out his collections. He also gave me a tip about one of the, if not the, original Okinawan Soba places around the area -Inaka Soba near Makishi Market.

It’s one of, if not the, best-tasting Okinawa Soba I’ve had so far in Okinawa.
