GLOUCESTERSHIRE overcame Somerset by nine wickets to win the inaugural Women’s Seniors South West Counties final at Frocester Cricket Club.
The two sides played off for the silverware after a first season of league competition which also featured Wiltshire. And it is hoped that more counties will take part next summer as interest in seniors cricket continues to grow.
Gloucestershire made the most of winning the toss, restricting their visitors to a challenge of 97 all out as Lucy Wilkes captured 3-24 while there were two wickets apiece for Clare Caudle-Stephens, Lucy Blackwell and Denise Holder.
Captain Maria Fowler then led the home side to the spoils with an unbeaten 41 while the player of the match award went to Lucy who also pocketed two catches.
Four members of the Gloucestershire side took part in the inaugural Women’s Masters World Cup.
Maria and Kelly Armfield lined up for England who were beaten by a Southern Hemisphere squad in the Over 40 final, while Trudy Bartlett and Lucy Wilkes helped England O50s overcome England O60s in a T20 clash.
Gloucestershire O70s, meanwhile, suffered a last over four-wicket reverse at Fairford Cricket Club against Worcestershire in the Vase semi-finals.
The home side reached 232-6 after losing the toss, skipper Keith Daniels (104) and John Evans (70) sharing a stand of 141 while there was also 38 from Mike Pearson.
Worcestershire, in reply, were cruising at 211-3 only for Graham Clarke to take three quick wickets, but the visitors rallied to get over the line with two balls to spare.
The 70s 2nds also went down, by four wickets against Fossils despite 52 (retired) from Peter Adams.
Gloucestershire O60s 3rds lost their Vase semi-final, slipping to an eight wicket reverse against Surrey at Apperley Cricket Club.
The home side battled their way to a total of 200 after losing the toss, Steve Dannatt top scoring on 36 before Surrey made comfortable progress to a place in the final with more than four overs to spare.
The 60ths 4ths also went down by eight wickets in their cup semi-final, against Kent at Moreton-in-Marsh Cricket Club.
Ash Hathaway (41 not) and Simon Embleton-Smith (41) dragged the home side up to a challenge of 180-8 ahead of Kent easing their way through with plenty to spare.
Gloucestershire O50s 3rds, meanwhile, completed an eight wicket friendly win away to Warwickshire who were restricted to 184-6 from their 40 ahead of unbeaten half centuries (retired) from opener Srini Kamath and Lee Pattison wrapping up the spoils.
ENGLAND, under the captaincy of Ed Gordon Lennox, shared the Over 60 World Cup honours with New Zealand when rain prevented a ball being bowled in the final in Mississauga, Canada.

HAWKESBURY Upton is to host the annual match between the Bristol & District and Gloucestershire leagues when the GCF Trophy will again be at stake on Saturday September 12.
Gloucestershire retained the silverware following a 32-run success last season at Coalpit Heath which made the overall score 2-2 since the inception of the challenge which celebrates club cricket across the county.
Lydney’s Jack O’Connell has been named captain of the Gloucestershire league side which features players from eight clubs, lncluding brothers Chris and James Job from Tetbury who have clinched promotion to WEPL for the first time in their club’s history.
Gloucestershire also call up Kingsholm skipper Luke Bond who has enjoyed a remarkable summer with the ball.
The seamer claimed 10-34 against Westbury-on-Severn in June, and has also finished with seven-wicket hauls on two occasions in a campaign to remember.
Bristol, meanwhile, will again be led by Claverham opener/wicketkeeper James Copeland with the side including club mate and all-rounder Lloyd Richardson.
Winterbourne, who are pressing for a return to WEPL, are represented by captain Ben Parker while Pak Bristolians, who are also in the promotion mix, provide Abdullah Tabraiz and Waqas Ahmad.
The match will get underway at 1pm.

This week's review as we edge towards the end of another super busy season ...

GLOUCESTERSHIRE Over 50s dug deep to complete a tremendous five wicket Plate quarter-final victory over Buckinghamshire at Downend Cricket Club.
The visitors reached an imposing 288-5 off their 45 after winning the toss, and grabbed the early initiative with the ball as Gloucestershire soon found themselves at 27-2.
But Ben Trotman (51) and Graham Herring (76) rebuilt the innings before Simon Hygate (67 not) helped close out the win with more than three overs to spare.
Gloucestershire Over 60s succumbed to a last over five wicket reverse away to Nottinghamshire in the cup quarter-finals.
The visitors were going well at 114-1 thanks to opener Rob Austen (62) and James Cotterill (40) before sliding to 133-8.
That was the signal for Phil Edge (20) and Nic Hayward (14) to share an unbroken stand of 36 which dragged their side up a total of 186-9.
And it was almost enough as Gloucestershire battled variantly in the field, only for the home side to seal the spoils with just three balls to spare.
The 60s 3rds, though, emerged 92 run home victors at Westbury-on-Severn Cricket Club over Cornwall to reach the last four of the Vase.
David Griffiths (75), Martin Hopkins (68 not) and opener Alan Thomas (45) dominated a total of 250-4 before Simon Mezsaros (4-15 from six), Hopkins (3-36) and Steve Dannatt (2-30) struck with the ball.
It was a good day too for the 60s 4ths who defeated Worcestershire by six wickets at Moreton-in-Marsh Cricket Club, David Parker retiring unbeaten on 50, but a GCF Friendly XI slipped to a 38-run reverse at Apperley Cricket Club against Western Australia Veterans, despite Ken Whitmore’s spell of 3-33.
Gloucestershire O70s, meanwhile, cruised into the semi-finals of the Vase, dispatching Devon by nine wickets at Lechlade Cricket Club.
Geoff Eaves struck with 4-19 from 6.1 as the visitors slipped to 156 all out before John Evans (71) and skipper Keith Daniels (67) shared an unbroken stand of 130 to see their side through in style.
JOHN Evans signed off after four years as captain by leading England O70s to a 3-0 series victory over New Zealand, following up victory in the first one day international at Frocester Cricket Club with successes at Farnham Royal and High Wycombe.
England Over 60s, skippered by Ed Gordon Lennox, are through to the semi-finals of their World Cup in Canada where they face Australia on Saturday with the winners meeting New Zealand or Pakistan on Sunday.
BEST of luck to Kelly Armfield and Maria Fowler who line up for England Over 40s on Sunday against a Southern Hemisphere XI in the inaugural Women’s Masters World Cup final, at Spytty Park, Newport (11am).
Trudy Bartlett and Lucy Wilkes have been named in an England O50s team that will face England O60s in a T20 clash, also at Spytty Park (10am).
