A tough afternoon for our 2nd XI this weekend, as a short-handed side of just nine players battled against Stapleton CC 3rd XI, eventually falling to a 169-run defeat.
After winning the toss and electing to field, the boys faced a difficult task with two players missing in the field as Stapleton posted 375/4 from their 40 overs. Despite the disadvantage, the lads kept working hard throughout the innings, with Sachi, Asanka, Naufel and Sanjaya each picking up a wicket.
Facing a huge target and with a shortened batting line-up, Asanka produced an outstanding innings at the top of the order, leading the fight with a superb 95, including 10 fours and a six. Weshan contributed 25 and Roshan added 19 as the boys continued to battle, eventually reaching 206 in 37.5 overs.
A special appreciation for Asanka, who put together a brilliant innings under difficult circumstances and came agonisingly close to a deserved century.
The final score doesn’t tell the whole story for a 2nd XI that took to the field with only nine players. A difficult afternoon, but plenty of credit to everyone who stepped up and competed until the end. We regroup and go again next week.
