Sometimes a danger nap can’t be avoided.

No need to panic!

If they fall asleep later in the afternoon (later than you want them to) then the best thing to do is keep the nap as short as possible. Wake them up as soon as you can.

Will they be slightly moody? Yes probably a little, BUT it’s the best way to avoid a crazy late bedtime.

❗️Important tip:
Focus on fun and silliness for that last stretch to bedtime after a danger nap - this keeps the mood light, helps them cheer up after the disappointment of waking them up.
PLUS it helps them build up that sleep pressure ready for bedtime again.

⭐️Watch them carefully:
The danger nap has provided them with a little pocket of rest, this means we now need to work out the most sensible bedtime.

The chances are, if the danger nap was under 10 minutes long, they should be ok with bedtime being roughly normal time, possibly 10/15 minutes later than normal based on the time of that danger nap.

If the danger nap was longer than 10 minutes then you are likely to need to push bedtime later, this is all based on the time of that nap and how tired they seem. Keeping a close eye on how they are as you get closer to bedtime to make the best decision.

If your toddler seems to struggle to make it to bedtime without a danger nap regularly then it’s possible their routine might need looking into to check it’s meeting their sleep needs.

Some children find bedtimes tricky, they are very aware that bedtime means a long stretch of time away from you, it feels different to naps (if still having them).

How we talk to our children has a huge impact on their ability to follow instructions, complete tasks and communicate with you.

Using playful language comes across to them as zero pressure, it’s not being made to be a big deal and there is less risk of them feeling anxious of the idea of bedtime. You may be able to avoid the push back.
It becomes part of your playtime, a natural progression into your bedtime routine.

Managing bedtime battles and big feelings around bedtime is one of my specialties.

I have so many tools and confidence building tips to share. This topic is something I could talk about for hours!

They need connection with you
They need a sense of control
They need to feel loved
They need a fun, positive bedtime routine
They need clear boundaries and routines
They need one to one time with you

At the end of a long day we are ready for them to go to bed, we are probably a little touched out, impatient and tired. Bedtime is probably the most important time of the day for you to build a strong connection with your child.

This is the ultimate time to focus on love, attention, enjoyment and positivity.

Make it fun! Fill them with love! You want them to go to bed happy, get those giggles out, last burst of energy out before bed. Keeping them wide awake during the bedtime routine will help them fall asleep once in bed.

Try it!
Let me know what happens for you!

It’s common for children to have their longest stint of sleep at the start of the night and then have a more restless second part of the night.

But why?!
⭐️ How they fall asleep / Ability to self settle- If a child is reliant on something to get drowsy or fall asleep on initially (rocking, feeding, contact etc) then when they wake in the night, they remain reliant on that process to happen again. This can get more difficult as the night goes on. If they have the ability to fall asleep without assistance then they can apply this pattern to night wakes to.

⭐️ Sleep Pressure - during awake times the sleep pressure increases, as they sleep this decreases. Sometimes children require some reassurance and assistance to resettle and stay asleep in the second part of the night.

⭐️Daytime sleep/Naps - following from the previous point, frequent wakes might be a sign that their daytime sleep is not optimal, their routine might need adjusting to ensure enough sleep pressure can build in order to sleep longer stretches.

⭐️ Environment- Daylight creeping into the room, external noises (birds, bin men), getting cold in the early hours is a common factor.

🌙 Remember that we as humans get the best quality sleep before midnight. That is our deepest, most restorative sleep.
Subtle changes can help your child link sleep cycles together easier throughout the whole night, it’s just a case of working out which things are impacting your child.

If you’re struggling to work out what’s causing your child’s frequent night wakes, I can tell you if you message me.

I’m taking the small wins … no matter how small 😂

Yes the “I do it” stage can be PAINFUL and takes a hell of a lot of patients… BUT moments like this can give you a few more minutes peace 😅

🤷🏻‍♀️So why is this relevant on a sleep page?!

Working on your childs ability to fall asleep independently takes patience, practice and for you to keep your cool, trying to resist the urge to do it for them!

Confidence building, encouragement, support and comfort when needed
