Tohei sensei always smiling🙂
This photo was in taken 1974 in Los Angeles and looks like it’s Steven seagal trying to lift Tohei.
The unbendable arm (曲がらない腕) is a fundamental Aikido exercise that demonstrates how real power comes from mind-body connection rather than physical strength. The goal is not to stiffen or resist, but to relax, extend intention, and unify the whole body through breath When mind, body, and energy line up, the arm becomes naturally unbendable and extremely stable, even without muscle tension.
People struggle to lift others when they rely only on muscle strength. Tension breaks body structure, disconnects the upper body from the hips, and weakens power. When breath and intention move through the whole body and alignment is correct, lifting becomes effortless—even with much heavier partners.
These exercises teach: relaxation instead of tension, unified movement, breath power (kokyu ryoku), confidence, and the essence of Aiki.
The unbendable arm proves that true strength is internal unity, not force and is essential training for understanding Aikido.
