Tuesday evening saw Talgarth Ladies travel across the border to Herefordshire to take on Wellington in our final friendly of the season.

We knew from the start that Wellington would provide a stern test. They’re a well-organised and competitive side, but Talgarth settled into their rhythm brilliantly after a tense opening few minutes.

Wellington threatened first, but Meg Ryan was alert off her line, sweeping confidently outside her box to s***f out the danger.

From there, Talgarth began to take control. The midfield started to dictate the tempo, with Lucy Belcher, Sophie Combstock, Jade Maddy and Jess Burdon linking up beautifully and moving the ball through the thirds with some excellent triangle play.

That confidence soon spread across the pitch, with Caitlin O’Shea, Milly Tame and Kirsty Rea constantly looking to stretch Wellington’s backline and exploit the space in behind.

⚽ 0–1 Talgarth

The breakthrough came from a superb passage of play. Kirsty Rea picked up the ball, spotted Caitlin O’Shea making an intelligent forward run and threaded a perfectly weighted pass into her path. Caitlin kept her composure and calmly found the back of the net from a tight angle.

Wellington responded almost immediately with a quick counter-attack. Their pacey forward broke through one-on-one and finished clinically into the corner.

Talgarth knew they had a game on their hands and responded by regaining their composure.

At the back, Catrin Davies, Chloe Lewis and Katie Nutter remained disciplined, holding their defensive shape and forcing Wellington to play around the outside rather than through the middle. Their defensive work gave Talgarth the platform to launch attacks on the counter.

⚽ 1–2 Talgarth

Some quick combination play through midfield released Milly Tame down the flank. Milly showed her pace and power, driving towards the byline before delivering an excellent cross into the box. Kirsty Rea met it with a thunderous first-time finish across the goalkeeper and into the net.

⚽ 1–3 Talgarth

Talgarth were now turning the screw.

Pressure from Milly Tame forced Wellington into a mistake and Talgarth won possession high up the pitch. The ball fell perfectly for Kirsty Rea, who made no mistake, finding the corner with another clinical finish.

Just before half-time, Jade Maddy produced one of the moments of the game. Picking the ball up in midfield, Jade drove forward and danced through challenge after challenge, leaving Wellington defenders in her wake before going one-on-one with the goalkeeper. The keeper produced an excellent save to deny her.

Chris Jones was introduced to freshen things up and help Talgarth see out the first half.

But Wellington refused to go quietly. A long ball released their quick winger, who raced forward before delivering across the box for their striker to finish.

SECOND HALF

Talgarth came out for the second half composed, confident and determined to put the game beyond Wellington.

And it didn’t take long.

Caitlin O’Shea showed her quality once again, finding space on the angle before unleashing a superb strike that flew into the top corner. An excellent finish.

⚽ 2–5 Talgarth

Then came another moment of quality. Jess Burdon spotted Caitlin’s run and delivered a beautifully weighted through ball. Caitlin showed great composure, rounded off the move and calmly placed the ball into the corner.

Wellington continued to battle and had opportunities of their own, with some efforts going narrowly wide and others safely dealt with by Bethan Walton, who remained composed between the sticks.

At the other end, Sophie Combstock, Jade Maddy and Lucy Belcher all went close, with efforts either saved by the Wellington goalkeeper or narrowly missing the target.

⚽ 2–6 Talgarth

Another brilliant piece of determination from Milly Tame.

Jade Maddy released the ball forward and it looked like it might run beyond Milly. But she simply refused to give up, turning on the afterburners and beating the advancing goalkeeper to the ball.

Milly managed to get her touch towards and in goal, but the challenge resulted in a collision between the two players. The Wellington goalkeeper, who had produced several excellent saves throughout the match, unfortunately couldn’t continue.

Credit to Wellington — despite the scoreline, they continued to show plenty of fight and stuck together as a team.

⚽ 3–6

Their persistence was rewarded when they created another good attacking opportunity and found the back of the net.

With around 20 minutes remaining, Penny Hourahane and Hollie Moule entered the action to freshen things up. Hollie slotted into the defence while Penny added fresh energy to the midfield.

⚽ 3–7 Talgarth

And finally, Jade Maddy got the goal her performance deserved.

After working tirelessly throughout the match and covering every blade of grass, Jade combined beautifully with Kirsty Rea, bursting into the box before keeping her composure and calmly finishing past the Wellington goalkeeper.

⚽ 3–8 Talgarth

With the game entering its final stages, both teams were beginning to tire — but Talgarth had one more piece of attacking quality left.

Penny Hourahane picked out Caitlin O’Shea, who then released Kirsty Rea into space behind the defence.

Kirsty made absolutely no mistake, calmly finishing to complete her hat-trick and put the final stamp on an excellent team performance.

A fantastic final friendly for Talgarth Ladies, with goals, attacking football, defensive resilience and some excellent passages of play from start to finish.

Most importantly, the performance showed the growth, confidence and teamwork this group has developed. From the backline to midfield and right through to the attack, every player contributed.

Thursday afternoon, Talgarth Town Ladies welcomed Llwydcoed Ladies to King George V Playing Fields for another pre-season friendly.

Talgarth started brightly, controlling the tempo and linking up well from front to back. With strength in depth across the squad, Talgarth were looking to build on their previous friendlies and put in another strong performance.

Early chances came from Jessica Burdon, Kirsty Rea, Taran Fitzgerald, Caitlin O’Shea and Sophie Comstock, but the opening goal just wouldn’t come, with efforts either going narrowly wide or being dealt with by the Llwydcoed keeper.

It wasn’t long before Talgarth finally broke the deadlock.

A fantastic move through midfield allowed Caitlin O’Shea to use her pace down the wing before delivering a brilliant ball into the box. Kirsty Rea timed her run perfectly and calmly slotted the ball past the keeper.
1–0

The second soon followed. Taran Fitzgerald spotted a gap between the Llwydcoed defenders, allowing Kirsty to advance into a tight angle before placing the ball across the keeper and into the net.
2–0

With Talgarth looking dominant, they perhaps eased off a little too much, allowing Llwydcoed back into the game.

The visitors began creating chances, but Bethan Walton was there to keep them at bay. Talgarth’s back line of Lucy Belcher, Catrin Davies, Chloe Lewis and Taran Fitzgerald also played a huge role in keeping Llwydcoed away from the danger areas.

Llwydcoed eventually pulled one back from a free kick on the edge of the box. Bethan initially made the save, but the rebound fell kindly to the visitors who converted.

Llwydcoed continued to press right up until half-time, but Talgarth held firm.

HALF-TIME: TALGARTH 2–1 LLWYDCOED

Talgarth came out for the second half with a renewed tempo, knowing the game was far from over.

Llwydcoed came out strongly themselves and managed to put the ball in the back of the net twice in the early stages of the second half, but on both occasions the goals were ruled out for offside.

The second decision was particularly tight and certainly debatable, with very little in it, but Talgarth survived the pressure and remained in front.

Then came the turning point.

New signing Jess Burdon really came into her own. After rounding two players and drawing defenders towards her, Jess produced a perfectly weighted pass to release Caitlin O’Shea, who broke through on goal and calmly extended Talgarth’s lead.

That goal proved vital.

Talgarth’s pressure continued to build, with new signing Emilie Buckwell also joining the attack from right-back, making dangerous runs and supporting the forward play.

The goals soon followed.

Jess Burdon marked her debut with a goal from the edge of the box, Caitlin O’Shea added another after going one-on-one with the keeper, before Jade Maddy produced arguably the goal of the game.

A Kirsty Rea corner found Jade perfectly, and she met it on the volley, sending it flying into the top corner. 🚀

With the game looking increasingly out of reach for Llwydcoed, Meg Ryan made an instant impact shortly after coming onto the pitch.

A perfectly threaded ball through to Kirsty Rea allowed her to complete her hat-trick and put Talgarth seven goals to the good.

Despite the scoreline, Llwydcoed showed fantastic spirit and determination right until the final whistle. The travelling side managed to score twice in the closing stages, bringing the final score to:

Today our ladies made the long trip to Tregaron for a pre-season charity friendly, supporting Catrin Davies as she raised money for the Little Princess Trust by cutting her hair.

It wasn’t our best performance, and we know there’s plenty to work on before the season gets underway, but there were also plenty of positives we can take away from the game as we continue building towards the new season.

Tregaron took the lead from the spot in the first half before adding a second in extra time to secure the 2–0 win.

The result wasn’t what we wanted, but today was about more than the football.

After the game, players, families and members of the community gathered at the local rugby club to support Catrin and we got to witness the big moment as she had her hair cut for this fantastic cause!

A huge well done to Catrin for doing something so special to help others. We’re incredibly proud to have been able to support her.

The first pre-season friendly of the season saw Talgarth Ladies welcome Canton Ladies to King George V Playing Fields on what can only be described as a scorching afternoon. Whoever ordered 30°C for a game of football clearly wasn’t thinking! ☀️🥵

Talgarth flew out of the blocks and looked the brighter side early on, creating chance after chance. Caitlin O’Shea, Kirsty Rea, Jade Perry, Sophie Combstock and Jade Maddy all had opportunities to open the scoring, but somehow the ball just refused to go in. The post was rattled, the crossbar was shaken and Canton’s goalkeeper had one of those afternoons where absolutely everything seemed to stick to her hands.

Behind them, Catrin Davis, Chloe Lewis and our two new signings, Leona Loxton and Emilie Buckwell, had their hands full dealing with a young and energetic Canton attack. In that heat, it was hard work, but they battled for every ball and never stopped working.

Fair play to Canton, they worked hard all over the pitch, pressed well and never allowed Talgarth to settle into our usual passing game.

Meg Ryan pulled off a fantastic save to keep things level, but moments later Canton took the lead when a ball across the six-yard box somehow found its way inside the far post.

Half-time: Talgarth Ladies 0-1 Canton Ladies

Talgarth knew the heat was starting to bite, but there was never any thought of giving up. Penny Hourahane was introduced early in the second half, adding some valuable experience as Talgarth looked to find a way back into the game. Unfortunately, Canton grabbed a second to make it 2-0.

What happened next summed up the spirit of this team.

Talgarth kept coming.

Milly Tame, Jade Perry, Meg Roe, Chris Jones and Jade Maddy all drove us forward looking for a way back into the game, and then came one of the moments of the match.

New signing Emilie Buckwell picked the ball up deep inside our own half and produced an unbelievable run, carrying it virtually the length of the pitch before sliding a perfect ball across Canton’s six-yard box. Jade Perry came charging in and was inches away from getting the finishing touch. It deserved a goal and would have been some way to announce yourself in a Talgarth shirt but wasn’t meant to be.

By this point, it genuinely felt like the goalposts had something against us. We hit the woodwork again… and again… and again. By the end of the game we'd hit the post or crossbar around eight times. On another day we'd have needed someone to keep changing the scoreboard.

A nice spell of passing football between Lucy Belcher, Sophie Combstock and Jade Perry drove Talgarth into the box. Talgarth finally got the goal we deserved when a penalty was awarded for handball. Kirsty Rea stepped up with confidence and buried it into the corner to make it 2-1.

Despite throwing everything we had at Canton in the closing stages, the equaliser just wouldn’t come.

The scoreline says defeat, but anyone who watched the game knows football can be a cruel sport. We created enough chances to win two or three matches, hit the woodwork more times than we can remember and never stopped fighting until the final whistle.

Pre-season is all about preparation. Fitness improves, sharpness returns and those chances start finding the back of the net. If this performance is anything to go by, there’s plenty for this squad to be excited about.
