Clayton Rangers were looking to build on a positive start to the Summer Cup and add another three points to the board against Bradford Albion.

Right from the first whistle, Rangers looked the brighter side, moving the ball well and creating plenty of early pressure. Albion defended resolutely, but it always felt like the breakthrough was coming.

It finally arrived from a set piece. Captain Rhys Wilko delivered a dangerous free-kick into the box that the Albion keeper could only flap at, leaving Cam Gill perfectly placed to nod home from close range.

The lead didn’t last long. Straight from the restart, a hopeful ball forward caused a rare mix-up at the back and the Albion striker kept his composure to slot past Kian Simsy and level things up.

To their credit, Rangers didn’t let their heads drop. They continued to dominate possession and asked plenty of questions of the Albion defence, but the final pass or finish just wouldn’t come.

Then came the moment of the match.

Picking the ball up around 30 yards from goal with his back to goal, Cam Gill produced a superb turn, shifted it out of his feet and absolutely leathered one. The ball smashed against the inside of the right-hand post, rolled across the line and nestled in the far corner.

No goalkeeper in the world was stopping that one. Take a bow, Cam. 🚀

The rest of the half passed without too much drama, although there was one bizarre moment. Mason Christie played the ball back towards Kian with his thigh, but the referee initially awarded an indirect free-kick inside the area for a back pass. After a quick rethink, common sense prevailed and the decision was overturned.

Rangers almost grabbed a third before the break when Kian’s booming clearance bounced over the Albion goalkeeper and looked destined for the net, only for the keeper to scramble back and somehow tip it around the post.

Half-Time | Rangers 2-1 Bradford Albion

The second half was more of a battle than a spectacle. Both sides searched for another goal, but clear-cut chances were few and far between.

Albion’s best opportunity came when they broke through one-on-one, but Kian stood tall to make an excellent save and preserve Rangers’ lead.

As the game wore on, the July heat—and maybe a few sore heads after watching England the night before! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 - started to catch up with both teams. Legs became heavier, passes a little slower, but Rangers dug in brilliantly and saw the game out to claim another well-earned victory.
