“Wow… how strong are you?” 🥹
Here she is. A big, strong woman. 💪🏼
He observes me.
He sees me challenge my body.
He sees me lift weights.
He sees me get out of breath.
He sees me train because it makes me feel good.
I’ve made training a normal part of our life.
Not because I hate my body.
Not because I need to “burn off” what I ate.
Not because I need to be smaller.
Because I want to be strong.
Because I want a healthy heart.
Because I always want to run around with him.
Because I want energy.
Because I want to feel capable in my body.
And honestly, I think about this a lot when I remember the messages many of us grew up with in the 90s.
Women’s bodies being constantly criticised.
Diet culture everywhere.
“Bikini bodies.”
Being told to make ourselves smaller.
Exercise being something you did to earn or burn off food.
90s… you’ve got a LOT to answer for. 🙃
So when your child asks why you’re working out, tell them it keeps your heart healthy — not that you need to burn off dessert.
Tell them you want to feel strong — not smaller.
When they ask why you choose certain foods, tell them they help you feel your best — not that you’re “being good” or “on a diet.”
Because before they form their own beliefs about their body, they’re watching us form ours.
They’re listening to the way we speak about ourselves.
They’re watching what we celebrate.
And I want my son to grow up believing that women’s bodies aren’t something to judge, shrink or apologise for.
I want him to see women as strong. Capable. Powerful.
And maybe one day, when he sees a woman lifting weights, he’ll think:
“Wow… how strong is she?” ❤️
