Our Westhoughton Lionesses are back training TOMORROW NIGHT and we’d love to see some new faces down at The Den.

Another Sunday done for our Junior Lions — festivals, wins, losses, plenty of rugby and, most importantly, plenty of kids out there enjoying the game! 🏉

A special mention to our Under 13s, who followed up last week’s confirmation as Division Three Champions with a 26–12 win over Heysham Atoms. Not taking their foot off the gas just yet! 👏🏆

🏆 RFL SOCIAL RL VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR – JP THOMPSON 🏆

We’re unfortunately going to have to say something nice about John Paul Thompson….

Today, before our Masters game against Leigh East, JP was presented with the Rugby Football League Social RL Volunteer of the Year Award by John McMullen from the Rugby Football League.

And, much as it pains us to admit it, it’s thoroughly deserved. 💙🧡

JP has been involved with Westhoughton Lions pretty much since there was a Westhoughton Lions to be involved with.

He was instrumental in establishing the club, played a huge part in getting our clubhouse built and was one of the driving forces behind creating our Masters team.

Put simply, without JP there’s a fair chance there’d be no clubhouse, no Masters team and possibly no Westhoughton Lions as we know it today. There definitely wouldn’t be Guinness on draught without him or a reason why there’s a sign saying “no dancing on chairs” next to the bar.

So after decades of commitment, countless hours of volunteering and helping build an entire rugby league club from the ground up, JP has finally reached the pinnacle…

He cuts the grass. 🌱👏

To make today even more special, JP then pulled on the boots for the Masters and demonstrated exactly why his talents are now better employed on a ride-on mower by knocking on directly from a scrum. 🏉

An inspirational performance befitting the RFL Social RL Volunteer of the Year. 😂

The new award will now sit proudly alongside the slightly terrifying JP Thompson bust we presented him with last year — meaning future generations will be able to learn about the great man even after we’ve finally banned him from touching the rugby ball.

Joking aside, this is a fantastic and thoroughly deserved recognition for someone who has given an enormous amount to our club over many, many years.

Congratulations JP. We’re incredibly proud of you.

🏉 HELP US SHAPE THE FUTURE OF GIRLS’ RUGBY AT WESTHOUGHTON LIONS! 🦁💙

We’re looking at how we can develop and grow our girls’ rugby pathway at Westhoughton Lions — and we want to hear from girls and their families.

Whether you already play rugby, have thought about giving it a go, play another sport, or have never played before, your views would be really useful.

We’ve put together a short online questionnaire to help us understand what girls want from local sport, what might encourage them to get involved, and anything that could currently be getting in the way.

🦁 JUNIOR WEEKEND ROUND-UP 🦁

🏆 UNDER 13s — DIVISION THREE CHAMPIONS! 🏆

They didn’t even need to make a tackle this weekend! Results elsewhere confirmed that our Under 13s have won their division after a remarkable season:

✅ 10 games
✅ 10 wins
✅ Division Three champions!

A fantastic achievement from every player and coach — thoroughly deserved! 👏

Elsewhere, our Under 10s and Under 11s both recorded excellent wins, while the Under 14s produced a brilliant performance to win 36–0 away at Bank Quay Bulls.

Our Under 12s narrowly lost 20–26 to Langworthy in a fiercely contested game, while our younger Lions enjoyed another busy weekend of festivals at Shevington Sharks, The Den, Ince Rose Bridge, Orrell St James and Rylands.

Well done to every player who pulled on the Lions shirt this weekend, and thank you as always to our coaches, volunteers, parents and supporters. 💙💛

Our Westhoughton Lions Cubs sessions are a fun introduction to rugby for boys and girls aged 3–6, with games, new friends and plenty of chances to burn off that apparently endless energy!

No experience needed — just come along and have a go. 💛💙

🦁 YOU KNOW YOU’RE A RUGBY PARENT WHEN… 😂

…“Where’s your gumshield?” is the most-used phrase in your house.

…you’ve driven 40 minutes to stand in sideways rain while your child tells you they’re too hot.

…your washing machine deserves its own Player of the Season award.

…“We need to leave in five minutes” is apparently the signal to start looking for boots.

…you’ve shouted “RUN!” from the touchline, just in case they hadn’t considered it.

…you spend the journey home discussing the game with someone whose only concern is what’s for dinner. 🍟

Everyone at Westhoughton Lions is saddened to hear of the passing of Bolton’s deputy mayor David Chadwick.

David was a valued supporter of our club and devoted many years to serving Westhoughton as a local councillor. We are grateful for his support and for everything he gave to the town and its community.

On behalf of our players, volunteers, committee and supporters, we send our heartfelt condolences to his wife Val, his family and friends.

Rest in peace, David, and thank you for your support of the Lions. 💛💙

🦁🏉 JUNIOR WEEKEND ROUND-UP 🏉🦁

Another Sunday done. Another few hundred miles added to various parents’ cars. And another weekend where absolutely nobody involved in junior rugby got a lie-in. 😂

The Lions were out in force again today, with our younger teams apparently conducting a full tour of the North West — Wigan St Pats, Thatto Heath, Blackbrook, Accrington and Crosfields all getting a visit. 🚗🏉

Plenty to celebrate too…

🟢 Under 10s picked up another great result with a win at home against Orrell St James.

🟡 Under 11s came away from Halton Farnworth with a draw after another good performance.

And then there are our Under 13s…

🔥 STILL UNBEATEN IN THE LEAGUE! 🔥

Another excellent performance at The Den saw them beat Portico Vine 28–6, continuing what is becoming a fantastic unbeaten run.

Week after week they’re getting the job done, but more importantly they’re doing it together — working hard, developing as a team and representing the club brilliantly.

Keep it going, lads! 👏💙💛

And while the scoreboard shows defeats for our Under 12s and Under 14s, it certainly doesn’t tell the whole story.

Both teams have shown massive progress compared with previous meetings and results. That’s exactly what junior rugby is about — learning, developing, closing those gaps and seeing all the work being put in at training start to show on a Sunday.

Sometimes progress comes with two points. Sometimes it comes with a much closer scoreline than the last time you played them.

Both matter. 💪🦁

We’re incredibly proud of the progress being made across those teams. Keep working, keep improving and keep going — the results will follow. 💙💛

And, as always, a massive thank you to our coaches and volunteers who make all of this happen, and to the parents for the lifts, encouragement, washing and for somehow remembering which part of Lancashire they’re supposed to be driving to at 9am on a Sunday. 😂

Most importantly, well done to every Lion who pulled on the shirt this weekend.

Another weekend of junior rugby in the books.
