πŸ’™ Drowning Prevention Week πŸ’™

This week at Sharks Swim School we’ve been focusing on skills that could one day save a life, not just swimming lessons.

Our swimmers have been learning:

βœ… Stop and think around water
βœ… Float to Live
βœ… Safe self-rescue techniques
βœ… Swimming in Pjs
βœ… What to do if they unexpectedly fall into water

Did you know that if you find yourself in difficulty in the water, your first instinct may be to panic? The Float to Live technique helps you stay calm, control your breathing and keep yourself safe until help arrives or you can reach safety.

🏊 Float on your back
🧘 Relax and control your breathing
πŸ—£οΈ Call for help
🚢 Once calm, decide your next action

Learning to swim is important, but water safety knowledge can be lifesaving.

Please take a few minutes this week to talk to your children about staying safe around water. Together we can help prevent drowning.

Today, everyone demonstrated excellent water safety skills. We practised:
🏊 Stopping, looking around and staying calm
⭐ Floating to stay safe
πŸ’¦ Safe self-rescues
πŸ‘• Swimming in our PJs to experience how clothes feel in the water

We are so proud of all our swimmers for their confidence, effort and focus on staying safe around water.

This weekend is set to bring warmer weather and sunshine to much of the UK. As temperatures rise and people head outdoors, it's vital to stay aware of water safety risks.

Understand the risks
β€’ Warm weather does not mean warm water
β€’ Open water remains dangerously cold
β€’ Cold water shock happens in seconds - take it seriously
β€’ It can cause an uncontrollable gasp and loss of breathing control

Know your limits
β€’ Even confident swimmers can quickly lose strength and control
β€’ It can become difficult to move or stay afloat
β€’ Panic can make the situation worse
β€’ Things can go wrong very quickly in open water

Take 5 minutes to brush up on your Water Safety Code before you head out this weekend. Download the Water Safety Code at www.rlss.org.uk/water-safety-code

🌊 World Drowning Prevention Day 🌊

Today we’re reminding everyone that drowning is preventable.

Swimming lessons aren’t just about learning strokes. They’re about building confidence, teaching lifesaving skills, and helping children stay safe in and around water.

From floating and treading water to understanding how to stay calm and get help, every lesson could make a difference.

πŸ‘• Don’t forget, today’s fun theme is T-shirts and shorts or PJs!

Let’s work together to create safer swimmers and safer communities.

Water Safety Week 🌊

This week we’ll be teaching the RLSS Water Safety Code as part of our drowning prevention lessons.

We’d love parents to watch this short video with their children before coming to class. It introduces the key messages we’ll be covering in the pool and helps children become familiar with the important safety steps around water.

The Water Safety Code focuses on:
β€’ Stop and Think
β€’ Stay Together
β€’ Call 999
β€’ Float

These simple actions can help save lives. We look forward to building on these skills during lessons.

Thank you,
