On Saturday 15th August, after two fantastic days of international walking football, England 65s
were crowned Masters World Cup champions.
With four wins on the first day of competition and two wins and a draw on the second day,
England qualified top of the group and headed into the final against the Republic of Ireland.
In a tightly contested match against familiar opposition England took an early lead. A well
constructed move from deep in England’s half ended with Peter Davenport laying off the perfect
pass for Graham Liddiard to find the corner of the net with a crisp right foot strike. Further efforts
from Peter Davenport, Ian Nicholls and Mark Potts were either narrowly off target or well saved by
the Irish keeper, Martin Sharkey. At the back Kevin Mooney ensured Ireland rarely had a sight of
goal and, on the one occasion that Mick O’Dwyer found space for a shot, Ken Hitchell produced a
fine save. Late in the game Graham Liddiard was denied a second goal by an outstanding save
from Martin Sharkey but in the end the one goal was enough for victory.
England’s captain Peter Davenport, the tournament’s top scorer with six goals, triumphantly lifted
the trophy sparking joyful celebrations among the England players and supporters.
The whole England squad deserve tremendous credit for their hard work in training and in other
competitions leading up to this event. In addition to their success on the pitch there is now an
incredible camaraderie and friendship among the group.
A massive thank you to the organisers and officials for an exceptionally well run event and an
extra special thank you to the wives, partners and players from England men’s and women’s
teams that supported us.

Congratulations to our Over 60s Women, who reached the Masters World Cup Final! 🏆🌍 It wasn’t their day, as they were narrowly beaten by Scotland, but what a phenomenal achievement! 👏👏

A fantastic two-day tournament saw the squad finish top of their league table, showcasing real quality, resilience and togetherness. 💪❤️ Even if they fell just short in the final, they should be incredibly proud of what they achieved.

A special shout-out to Kirsten, who proudly received her first international cap — an incredible milestone! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 👏

Special thanks also from all of us to Kato for stepping in for the Masters. 🙌❤️ Your support was hugely appreciated!

It was also a bittersweet moment as we said a fond farewell to Gail, who is retiring from the EWF. 💐 Gail has given so much, and we wish her all the very best in her next chapter. ❤️🥰

World Masters 55 Play Classic – Final 🏆

The opening final of the Masters World Cup saw both our sides battle their way through to the final.

A seesaw game had everything — honesty, skill, drama and even a penalty save in normal time.

Blues took an early lead, 1–0, before Whites equalised, 1–1.

Whites were then awarded a penalty for a 5th offence. David Bendall from Whites told the referee he hadn’t been touched, and common sense prevailed, with the referee overturning his decision. 👏

Blues had a goal disallowed, which resulted in a penalty for a 5th offence being awarded to Whites. With 3 minutes left, the penalty was saved.

Whites then scored with a minute remaining to make it 2–1, before Blues snatched an equaliser with just 10 seconds to go! 2–2.

Penalties ended 3–3, with Blues winning 1–0 in sudden death.

What a final! 👏👏

Well done to both teams. ⚽️🏆

After a year of going unbeaten, we head into the World Masters Cup this weekend with great aspiration and belief. It will be a huge challenge, but a very welcome one, as we face some talented opposition we’ve met before, while also looking forward to testing ourselves against some new and unknown teams. We have a fantastic squad, and everyone is looking in great shape. It’s been branded as the biggest walking football competition, so I’m really looking forward to being immersed in the experience with the team, staying focused on all the work we’ve put in throughout the year, and embracing the opportunity to showcase the incredible talent England has to offer.
