The meeting which promised so much quite simply turned into a disaster for the sports car boys, many leaving Birmingham feeling cheated, having wasted money on what became a pointless weekend.
An early start on the Monday with the remaining half hour of the aborted session was run before the day’s intended business…
But fate was working against things, for the session was but 13 minutes old when Robin Smith had a horrifying accident while flat out in his Simpson GC2/Cosworth.
The car was turned into a fireball when it hit the barrier on one of the fastest parts of the circuit as the fuel tanks ruptured. The reaction of the marshals was immediate, they doused the car with foam the second it came to a halt, despite the 20 foot plume of flame and smoke which belched from the wrecked car.
Smith miraculously managed to get out of the inferno with his overalls alight and was immediately extinguished by the marshals, action which without doubt saved his life’.
14:46 - 15:40 - Thundersports Heat 1 & 2 qualifying
John Brindley’s only mistake during the qualifying session after securing pole position as he trundled around at the front of the pack, John suddenly went straight at the Ferodo right hander, simply losing his way but thankfully stopping short of the tyre wall.
Also the Tiga SC82 of John Sheldon/Mike Kimpton would encounter some difficulties approaching the same corner twice but the car manageed to get away with it both time.
