Though platinum jewellery became the height of fashion during the Art Deco period and historically, has been the most valuable precious metal, the hallmarking of platinum only became law with the passing of the Hallmarking Act 1973 and was put into practice in 1975.

Today, though gold currently reigns supreme, platinum is still prized for its durability and shine.

Get to know all of the marks we can apply to platinum here at Birmingham Assay Office, whether by laser or punch.

Ever wondered how we determine the purity of gold in our laboratory? 🔬

Here's a behind-the-scenes look at the traditional Fire Assay process, all in under a minute!

🔬 Step 1: Sampling
A small sample is taken to represent the entire item. We first analyse it using XRF to gain an indication of what to expect from the final result.

⚖️ Step 2: Weighing
The sample is carefully weighed using a highly sensitive balance to ensure accuracy from the very start.

➕ Step 3: Addition
The gold alloy is inquarted with silver and combined with lead. This helps capture impurities and base metals during heating, making them easier to separate.

🔥 Step 4: Heating
The sample is heated to around 1100°C in a porous cupel. The lead and base metals oxidise and are absorbed into the cupel, while the precious metals remain behind as a small bead.

📏 Step 5: Rolling & Flattening
Once cooled, the bead is removed and rolled into a thin disc. This increases its surface area and prepares it for the next stage.

🧪 Step 6: Parting
The metal is placed in nitric acid, which dissolves any remaining silver and leaves behind pure gold.

⚖️ Step 7: Final Weighing
The purified gold is weighed on a high-precision balance to determine the exact gold content and purity of the original sample.

This ancient testing method has been used for thousands of years and is still recognised worldwide as the most accurate way to determine gold purity.

Since General Production Safety Regulations (GPSR) were introduced in December of 2024, we've seen countless makers and manufacturers confused by what the European legislation really means for them.

GPSR applies to anyone trading consumer products in the EU, and the objective is to protect customers by providing safe goods.

But what does that mean for jewellery?

It means regulated levels of hazardous Nickel, Lead and Cadmium, no physical hazards, concrete traceability, and accurate labelling.

Here at Birmingham Assay Office, our UKAS accredited analytical laboratory is your expert partner for compliance, helping to support your business and protect your customers.

Our team can develop a robust bespoke testing programme, advise you on the essential documentation, and connect you with a required EU Responsible Person (EURP).

Get in touch to understand this complex but essential piece of legislation and open for business in Europe. 🇪🇺
