High Performance isn't a label. It's an environment.

It means training with intent. Understanding your development objectives. Being challenged. Competing. Receiving feedback.

Taking responsibility. Reviewing performance. Returning ready to work again.

That's the environment we're building through GS High Performance 2026/27.

45 players. 3 groups. A structured development programme.

The programme begins in September.

DM "HP" for the programme information and registration process.

Pressure doesn’t make the player. It reveals the habits, discipline, and standards they’ve built long before the moment arrives.

High performance is built through intentional training, attention to detail, and the discipline to keep improving when nobody is watching.

Build the standard in training. Bring it to the game.

More coaching does not automatically mean more development. A player can train five times a week and still lack direction.

The question isn't: "How many sessions are they doing?"
The better questions are: What are we developing? Why is it a priority? How are we developing it? How will we know whether
it has improved? What happens next?
Coaching should form part of a development system. Not simply fill a diary.

Don't count sessions. Measure development.

CAN YOU SPOT THE PROBLEM?

Player development starts with understanding. Not changing ten things at once. Observe. Identify the priority. Create the intervention. Allow the player to understand it. Execute. Review.

In this session we identified the player pulling the bowling arm down and away during delivery, creating an inconsistent arm path that affects alignment, release point, and overall accuracy. The objective wasn’t perfection in one session. It was to create understanding and begin moving the skill in the right direction.

Understanding creates ownership. Ownership creates action. Action creates growth.

Your child didn't make county. What happens next matters.

One selection decision should not become their identity. Use it as information. Where possible, understand the feedback.

Identify the genuine development gaps. Create clear objectives. Continue competing. Build physically. Keep developing the
player. Then reassess.

Some players progress early. Others progress later. The responsibility is to keep building.
Save this for the next trial period and send it to another cricket parent.

If I was 15 again, I would spend far less energy worrying about selection. I would focus on becoming a better player.
Selection matters. But you cannot control every decision a coach or selector makes. You can control: your preparation, your skill development, your physical development, your response to setbacks, your performances, your standards, your
consistency.

Young players can lose months worrying about decisions outside their control. Put that energy back into your development.

Become difficult to ignore.

Send this to a young player who needs it.

Selection is rarely about one number. Runs and wickets matter.

But developing players are also showing coaches much more:
How they move. How consistently they can execute a skill. How they make decisions. How they respond to pressure and
mistakes. How they receive information. How they compete.

Statistics tell part of the story. The player tells the rest.

Follow GS as we continue breaking down player development and the cricket pathway.

Talent creates opportunity. It doesn’t guarantee progression. Three things repeatedly limit talented young players:

1. Training without a clear development objective.
2. Confusing more cricket with better development.
3. Developing technique while neglecting the physical, tactical and mental demands of performance.

Development must become deliberate. Understand what needs to improve. Build the right environment. Execute consistently. Review. Repeat.

Save this and send it to a player who needs to hear it.
