Maybe wellbeing isn’t about doing everything right…

We’re often given the impression that wellbeing means eating perfectly, exercising five times a week, meditating at sunrise and drinking something green that tastes suspiciously like lawn clippings. 😂

But I think wellbeing is much more ordinary — and much more personal — than that.

Sometimes it’s counselling, having somewhere safe to talk, untangle your thoughts and make sense of what you’re feeling.

Sometimes it’s food, not about diets or deprivation, but about nourishing yourself and finding ways of eating that make you feel good and actually fit into your life.

Sometimes it’s movement — walking in the fresh air, stretching, dancing badly in the kitchen, going to the gym… or simply getting your body moving in a way that feels manageable.

Sometimes it’s mindfulness, learning to pause for a moment rather than constantly rushing on to the next thing.

And sometimes complementary therapies can be part of that picture too — creating space for relaxation, calm and reconnecting with yourself.

And then there are the things that don’t always make it onto the wellbeing checklist…

A proper laugh.
A walk in the woods.
A cup of tea.
Music you love.
A good book.
Time with someone who makes you feel completely yourself.
Or occasionally doing absolutely nothing and not feeling guilty about it.

Because perhaps wellbeing isn’t about becoming a completely different, healthier, calmer, more organised version of ourselves. Perhaps it’s about looking after the person we already are.

There isn’t one magic ingredient. It’s about finding the combination of things that support you — emotionally, physically and mentally — and remembering that small changes count too.

You don’t have to overhaul your whole life to start feeling a little better.

If you’d like some support with your emotional wellbeing, counselling can provide a safe, compassionate space to explore what’s happening for you and think about what might help.

When life is difficult, laughter can sometimes feel like the last thing we should be doing.

But humour doesn’t mean we’re ignoring the difficult stuff. Sometimes it’s actually one of the ways we cope with it. A good laugh can give us a moment of relief. It can help us connect with other people, loosen the grip of stress and remind us that we are more than our worries, responsibilities and to-do lists.

I don’t wait until something funny happens. I try my best to make a little room for humour in my everyday life- and I encourage you to do the same. Here are my top tips to add a bit of humour into your everyday life.

🎬 Put on the comedy programme you know will make you laugh.

🎧 Listen to a comedian or funny podcast on your walk.

📱 Send a ridiculous meme to a friend — preferably one that requires absolutely no context.

📖 Read something funny. A novel, a comic, a column… or the internet’s finest collection of badly behaved cats.

Spend time with people who make you laugh and, importantly, people you don’t have to edit yourself around.

And notice those tiny, ridiculous moments in everyday life. The things that make you smile, the unexpected moments, the absurdity of being human.

As a counsellor, I don’t believe we have to spend every minute of therapy talking about the serious stuff. Sometimes a little humour can create breathing space, build connection and help us see things from a slightly different angle.

Of course, humour isn’t appropriate for every situation — and sometimes we genuinely need to sit with the difficult stuff. But there’s room for both. We can take our lives seriously without taking ourselves seriously all the time.

So perhaps this week, give yourself permission to seek out a little more laughter.

It might be good for your wellbeing.

And if nothing else, it gives you an excellent excuse to watch that comedy you’ve already seen twelve times. 😉

Why am I a good counsellor?

I sometimes find this a difficult question to answer.

Not because I don’t believe in what I do, but because being a good counsellor isn’t really about having all the right words, giving great advice or having a clever answer for everything.

For me, it’s about being able to sit alongside someone when life feels messy, frightening, confusing or just… too much.

I think I’m a good counsellor because I’m genuinely curious about people. I don’t expect you to fit neatly into a box, and I won’t judge you for the things you find difficult.

I bring together different ways of working, including person-centred therapy, CBT, psychodynamic approaches, Compassion Focused Therapy and ACT. But I don’t believe therapy should feel like you’re being given a textbook treatment plan.

You’re a person, not a diagnosis.

Sometimes we might talk. Sometimes we might gently challenge an unhelpful thought. Sometimes we might explore where something has come from. And sometimes a bit of creativity, mindfulness or simply having space to breathe can be more helpful than another conversation.

I’m also very human. I don’t sit on the other side of the room pretending I’ve got life completely figured out. I know that being human can be complicated. I know what it’s like to struggle, to overthink, to doubt yourself and to wonder whether things can actually change.

And perhaps most importantly, I really care about the people I work with. My aim isn’t to “fix” you.

It’s to help you understand yourself a little more, be kinder to yourself, feel more able to cope with life’s difficult bits and, ultimately, feel more like you again.

So perhaps that’s why I think I’m a good counsellor.

Not because I have all the answers. But because I’m willing to sit with you while we find some of yours. ❤️
