Nobody hands you a manual when you hit 40.⁣

One day you’re following the same training plan you’ve always done, wondering why the weight isn’t moving, your joints ache for three days after leg day, and your energy disappears somewhere between the school run and your second coffee.⁣

The advice you usually get?⁣

“Train harder.”⁣

That’s about as useful as telling a dad with three kids to “just get more sleep.”⁣

Here’s what I wish someone had told me.⁣

Recovery isn’t a luxury anymore—it’s part of the programme. The session itself is only the stimulus. You get stronger when you recover from it.⁣

Sleep isn’t something you earn after you’ve finished everything else. It’s one of the biggest performance enhancers available, and unlike another supplement, it’s actually backed by decades of evidence.⁣

Your hormones don’t exist in isolation. Testosterone and stress are constantly pulling against each other. Chronic stress, poor sleep and trying to survive on caffeine and willpower all make it harder to build muscle, lose fat and recover well. It’s not an excuse. It’s physiology.⁣

And yes, progressive overload still works. It always will. But chasing personal bests every week isn’t the badge of honour it used to be. Sometimes progression is adding one rep. Sometimes it’s improving technique. Sometimes it’s walking away feeling like you could have done one more set instead of crawling to the car park.⁣

I learned this the hard way.⁣

I trained harder at 38 than I ever did at 28.⁣

More volume. More sessions. More intensity.⁣

And I got worse results.⁣

Not because I stopped working hard.⁣

Because I was still trying to train like the younger version of me instead of coaching the man I’d become.⁣

Everything changed when I accepted that smarter beats harder.⁣

That’s now the foundation of every programme I write for busy dads.⁣

If you’re somewhere between 38 and 50 and feeling frustrated because what used to work doesn’t anymore...⁣

Your frustration is valid.⁣

But it’s also fixable.⁣

Motivation is a liar.⁣

It shows up when life is easy, disappears when work runs late, the kids don’t sleep, or you’re running on four hours and caffeine. If your fitness depends on feeling motivated, you’re building on sand.⁣

That’s why so many dads keep starting over.⁣

Monday they’re fired up. Wednesday they’re negotiating. Friday they’re promising they’ll “get back on it next week.”⁣

The problem isn’t discipline.⁣

The problem is relying on an emotion to drive a behaviour that needs to happen whether you feel like it or not.⁣

Systems don’t care how you feel.⁣

A scheduled training time. Meals planned before you’re hungry. A gym bag packed the night before. A simple programme you can follow without thinking. Non-negotiables that remove decisions and eliminate excuses.⁣

When you remove choice, consistency becomes inevitable.⁣

The men who stay fit for years aren’t waking up inspired every morning. They’re just following a process they’ve repeated so many times it has become part of who they are.⁣

Every fit dad I know isn’t more motivated than you.⁣

They just built better systems.⁣

That’s the only difference.⁣

Build the system. Follow it.⁣
