Sit down with a coffee and have a chat with you favourite AI App about your life and career.
Then simply ask it what its perception of what you really offer society, as an individual and a professional.
You will be surprised at how valuable you really are to people in life, and not just your loved ones.
We all tend to be self critical and some of us even quite hard on ourselves.
My own observations over 37 yrs of coaching and observing others and even attempting to walk in their shoes emotionally, is that above all else, confidence, motivation, success strategies and "secrets", self value is the string that holds the pearls of our life together.

Without self value we leave room for self criticism, self doubt and even self loathing at times.

We all value objects that are rare and unique.

In the history of mankind there has never been anyone like you before or will be in the future and you are as unique as your fingerprints.

Learn to value yourself.

The Most Powerful Health Question Isn't Asked by a Doctor

In 1991, Reader's Digest reported on a fascinating study.

Researchers asked people over 65 one simple question:

"Would you say your health is excellent, good, fair or poor?"

Those who rated their health as poor were four to five times more likely to die over the next four years than those who rated it as excellent.

No blood tests.
No scans.
Just one honest answer.

Why?

Because our bodies are constantly giving us signals. Changes in energy, sleep, recovery, mood and resilience often appear long before illness is diagnosed.

Science now recognises this internal awareness as interoception, our ability to sense what's happening inside our bodies.

The problem is that many professionals have become disconnected from these signals.

Business owners, leaders, managers and consultants are often so busy pushing through deadlines and pressure that they ignore the body's whispers until they become shouts.

That's one of the reasons I teach Qigong, breathwork and traditional self-maintenance practices in my corporate workshops.

These methods help people slow down, regulate stress and reconnect with their body's early warning signs.

For HR professionals planning wellbeing programmes, and for business owners who know their greatest asset is their people, perhaps it's time to ask a different question:

Are we teaching our teams how to listen to their bodies before stress turns into sickness?

Healthy people build healthy businesses, and it starts with awareness.

25 Years of Practice

Looking through old photographs recently, I realised something.

Over the last 25 years I've worked with people of different ages, backgrounds and abilities. Through sport, business, workshops, retreats, coaching and education, thousands of conversations, observations and experiences have accumulated into something that is difficult to describe.

It's easy to look at experience as simply "time served."

But experience isn't really about time.

It's about pattern recognition.

There is an old story about an engineer who was called to fix a machine that had stopped an entire factory. After examining it for a few minutes, he took out a small hammer and tapped one spot. The machine immediately sprang back to life.

His invoice was substantial.

The factory owner protested. "How can you charge that much for one tap of a hammer?"

The engineer replied:

"One pound for the tap. The rest for knowing where to tap."

That is the value of practice.

Over time, knowledge becomes something more than information. You begin to recognise patterns before they fully emerge. You notice what others overlook. Solutions arrive more quickly, not because you're working harder, but because you've travelled similar terrain many times before.

What fascinates me is that much of this expertise becomes invisible to the person who possesses it.

You forget how much you've learned.

You forget the mistakes you've already made.

You forget the thousands of interactions, decisions, successes and failures that quietly shaped your understanding.

It's as though you develop a series of internal maps. At first, every situation requires conscious thought. Eventually, experience allows you to navigate both cognitively and intuitively. You still think carefully, but you are also drawing upon years of accumulated observation and practice.

Education is important. It provides foundations.

Practice turns foundations into capability.

And capability, developed over years of real-world experience, often appears effortless from the outside.

The photographs in this collage represent only moments in time. What they don't show are the years of preparation, reflection, learning, adaptation and practice behind them.

Twenty-five years later, I am still learning.

But I am increasingly aware that some of the most valuable things I've learned were not found in books or classrooms alone. They were learned through doing, observing, failing, adjusting and returning to practice again and again.

Experience doesn't replace learning.

It is what learning becomes when it is lived.

Last Thursday was the 3rd in a series of Mental Health and Well-being workshops for N I Electricity Ltd.
The Retreat for 40 staff was held at the DoubleTree by Hilton Belfast Templepatrick.

Drawing on 37 years of experience in traditional martial arts, I introduced participants to ancient practices for modern living, time-tested principles and exercises that develop physical strength, mental resilience, emotional balance, and overall well-being.

Throughout the retreat, participants engaged in practical, interactive exercises designed to improve:
• Physical health, posture, balance, and movement
• Mental and emotional well-being
• Emotional intelligence and self-awareness
• Spatial awareness and personal identity
• Focus, resilience, and confidence

What made the day particularly rewarding was the overwhelmingly positive feedback.
Many participants described the experience as refreshing because it moved away from the traditional workshop format.

There were no lengthy PowerPoint presentations, no lectures, and no predictable team-building activities. Instead, the day was highly interactive, practical, engaging, and empowering, with participants actively experiencing and learning skills they could immediately apply in their daily lives.

Most importantly, everyone left with simple but powerful tools they can continue to practise and develop for years to come, helping them maintain and improve their physical, mental, and emotional health long into the future.

This was the third in a series of workshops I have been delivering for Northern Ireland Electricity, and it continues to be a privilege to support an organisation that values the well-being and personal development of its people.

A sincere thank you to everyone who participated with such enthusiasm, openness, and willingness to step outside their comfort zones.

It was a pleasure to be contracted once again by Bremar Wellbeing, the Belfast-based mental health and wellbeing organisation led by Brendan “Barney” Herron and Mark McNally.

Their experience and commitment to supporting mental health and wellbeing across communities is solid.

I recently had the opportunity to work with 120 staff from the Education Authority, sharing simple yet powerful resilience-building processes developed through more than 30 years studying the mind-body connection and its role in health and wellbeing.

It was also fantastic to introduce the group to the ancient art of Qigong, a practice that can be used by anyone, with growing scientific evidence supporting its benefits for both physical and mental health, and which continues to be used in hospitals throughout China.

In today’s world, resilience is no longer a luxury, it’s essential. Small daily practices can create powerful long-term changes in both wellbeing and performance.

BACK WHEN LEADERS EARNED THEIR POSITION AND WALKED THE TALK.

Theodore Roosevelt.
He was famous for boxing, wrestling, jiu-jitsu training, and maintaining what was essentially a combat-sport culture inside the White House.
Roosevelt even had sparring sessions with military officers and athletes while president, and reportedly installed mats and training areas for wrestling and boxing.
He believed physical toughness, emotional resilience, and disciplined energy were essential qualities of leadership.
Roosevelt trained:
Boxing
Wrestling
Jiu-jitsu / judo
Singlestick fighting
Horse riding
Military combat conditioning
He boxed so intensely during his presidency that one sparring session permanently damaged the vision in one of his eyes.
Another famous example was Abraham Lincoln, who was an elite frontier wrestler before becoming president. Lincoln reportedly competed in hundreds of wrestling matches and became known for his immense strength and resilience. He was later honored by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
What’s interesting is that both Lincoln and Roosevelt embodied many of the traits you’re talking about in your leadership philosophy:
Physical conditioning
Emotional resilience
Presence under pressure
Courage
Discipline
Experience forged through adversity
That old-world style of leadership carried a very different energy compared to much of modern leadership culture today.

I’ve spent over 30 years around fighting, discipline, and training.

Here’s what I’ve learned:

Anyone can be aggressive.
That’s easy.

Control?
Respect?
Restraint?

That’s real strength.

That’s what young men need to be taught again.

We’re seeing more and more young men disrespecting women in schools, online, and in public.

This isn’t random.

It’s what happens when:
identity is unclear,
discipline is low,
and the wrong behaviour gets rewarded

Most of these boys aren’t born this way.

They’re shaped this way.

And that means it can be changed.
