◆ Calligraphy by Tomiki Kenji shihan: "Yobushin" (Cultivating a Martial Mind)

Tomiki shihan wrote that the true purpose of martial arts training is to achieve good health, enhance the ability to take the initiative and be proactive, and foster good character as a member of society. Tomiki shihan notes that these are achieved through intensive practice of techniques, and that refinement of technique is synonymous with refinement of the mind and the spirit. This is a principle that applies to all modern sports and competitions.
Regarding the nature of Japanese martial arts, Tomiki shihan teaches that training transitions from mere technique to a deeper "path," and the correct heart or mind for seeking this path is "Bushin" (Martial Mind). By understanding the principles of combat, practicing daily, and gaining experience through matches, we develop a resilient mind that never yields to violence. This is the same as learning the state of "mushin" (no mind) from the posture of "mugamae" (no posture). In essence, the "martial mind" is cultivated along the "path" of pursuing the ideal of "Mushin Mugamae."
Cultivating this mindset is no simple task. As Miyamoto Musashi wrote in The Book of Five Rings, "A thousand days of practice is forging, and ten thousand days of practice is refining." The path of martial arts cannot be mastered overnight. However, by repeatedly refining our techniques and accumulating practical experience through matches, we can ultimately achieve the personal growth required to positively contribute to modern society. This deep meaning is precisely what is contained within the phrase "Yobushin" (Cultivating a Martial Mind).
The message embedded in Tomiki shihan's calligraphy "Yobushin," reflects both the purpose of our training and the ideal path that all practitioners should strive for, as well as the heart and mindset that should be continually refined through daily training.
