Jimmy Bruen final
Our Jimmy Bruen campaign began against Galgorm Golf. Away from home, Stewart and Paul, along with Nathan and Jim, pulled off an unbelievable victory, while the lads at home did the job to send us through.
Bushfoot was next. At home, the dream team of Stevie and Gibbo won their match before Paul and Stuart secured a fantastic point away from home. After those victories, we thought weβd be sticking with the same team throughout the campaign, especially as such a small club, but other players stepped up when needed.
Next came the fantastic Portsalon Golf Club side. Ciaran OβConnor came in for Bangor Boy Conlon to partner Hugh McComb, while Chris McGrogan teamed up with Paul McCorry. Both pairings won their matches as we recorded a brilliant 3-1 victory. After beating a club of Portsalonβs calibre, there was a real belief around Colin Valley that the lads could go far in this yearβs Jimmy Bruen.
Our toughest opponents yet were Cushendall Golf Club. A fantastic comeback was needed at home, with the tie eventually going to a playoff. The dream pairing of Paul and Chris delivered once again, getting us over the line and into the semi-final.
In the semi-final we faced Ballybofey. Big Joe Crawford came into the team after an excellent practice round, and the lads got the job done to book a place in the Jimmy Bruen Final at Letterkenny. Paul and Chris once again secured a valuable away point.
A special mention must go to team captain Paul Cochrane, whose selections throughout the campaign proved inspired. His calm, easy-going nature created a relaxed atmosphere during practice rounds and match days, helping the lads perform at their best. We came up against teams with players playing off handicaps as low as 3.5, while some of our own lads were playing off 14 and above.
The final against Newtownstewart Golf Club at Letterkenny had a fantastic atmosphere, with a great buzz around the course.
Brian and Nathan led us out. After some first tee nerves left them one down early, they settled into the match brilliantly. It could have gone either way, but a textbook 18th hole from both players secured a valuable half.
Next up were Gibbo and Stevie. After a perfect opening drive from Stevie, the lads battled hard on every hole. Despite falling a few down, they kept piling the pressure on their opponents and fought right to the end before Newtownstewart eventually claimed the point.
Hugh and OC were next. Another great opening drive set the tone as they built an early lead and controlled much of the match. However, the golfing gods had other ideas. From the 13th hole onwards, Newtownstewart mounted a superb comeback to earn a half.
The final pairing of Paul and Chris were cool, calm and collected from the first tee to the last. Their victory never really looked in doubt, and with a playoff looming, everyone felt they were the pair you would want representing the club.
The playoff attracted a good crowd. Paul found the rough from the tee, Chris needed to play a high fade over trees and water. He produced an outstanding shot to leave the ball just short of the green after watching Newtownstewart hit safely onto the putting surface. Newtownstewart two-putted for par, but Chris held his nerve to hole a superb putt and extend the playoff to the second hole.
On the second, Chris found the edge of the fairway while Newtownstewart split the middle. Both teams laid up on the par five before producing excellent approach shots. By then it had become more of a putting contest than a playoff, and unfortunately Newtownstewart held their nerve.
The club was gutted not to win the final, but we couldnβt have lost to a better bunch of lads. Every player enjoyed a fantastic day, played in great spirit. A big thank you to Letterkenny Golf Club for hosting an excellent final.
Hopefully next year Colin Valley can go one step further and bring the Jimmy Bruen title home.
